November 30, 2006 - Thursday

I got to stay at home for most of the day today. Actually had to run out briefly, since I had done some shopping for a friend and needed to get her stuff to her. But otherwise, I stayed at home and ran a couple loads of laundry and paid some bills and stuff like that.

You can tell that I'm sitting in waiting rooms for appointments and such by the amount of fiction that I've been reading. The small paperbacks are alot easier to carry with me than my bigger crafting books and such.

Next month you will see the list of movies expand as I watch as many Christmas movies and specials that I can. I love this time of year!

November 29, 2006 - Wednesday

This has been a very busy week. Twice to PT, once to Doc's office, grocery shopping, Christmas shopping... Seems like I was hardly home at all this week. Thankfully, that will be my busiest week until Christmas. Then it's company and dinner and all that good stuff!

PT and doc's appt went well, my ankle and achilles is healing much faster than they anticipated. The doc told me I'm way ahead of the "curve". I told him that's because of the Great Healer above! He told me that always helps. Helps? He heals. I wasn't expected to be able to walk right, you know, have a limp or have to use a cane. I barely use my cane, only when I'm tired now. So that's REALLY good. As for the limp, well, I've had that for years and it's better now that it was. I'm not surprised, even if the doctor is.

November 28, 2006 - Tuesday

I'm almost done all my shopping! HURRAY!!! But I love shopping, but now I need to concentrate on housework. I still am a year behind or so in my cleaning!

Worked on some pressing things this morning and got them shipped off in the mail today. Will explain later what I'm talking about. No biggy. Just fun!

Then I washed my new "bean dish" bowls. Jim doesn't like them cause they are bright colors rather than plain white. But I like them and we needed them badly. Others had cracked etc. So, these will have to do for the next few years.

Also purchased a couple of "deep" dish pie pans. The ones I've had for years are not very deep and when I make pumpkin pies each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I always say I'm going to get some "deep" dish ones. Well, this year I remembered, so I got them! Look out Christmas pumpkin pies!!!

Man, I love this time of year!! The excitement of the holidays, the shopping, the family get-togethers.... No, I REALLY DO love it!!! It's not the presents (though that's always fun too) but it's all the times we get together that make it truly special! And the air is cooler, less spiders and bees, hopefully none by Christmas. Ah, yes, the smell of pine tree in the house and cookies baking in the oven and turkey dinner. Yes, I love this time of year!

November 27, 2006 - Monday

PT is going very well. Doesn't hurt at all now to do the stuff. So that's good.

I've been trying to get some of my miscellaneous Christmas shopping done. I just do a little each week. Mostly trying to get stuff done at home. Had fun shopping in a hobby store today. Always love to look at all the Christmas stuff!

November 26, 2006 - Sunday

Worked on laundry and then concentrated on my piles of paperwork in the music room. It's going to take awhile! First I have to sort them and then move them out of the way so I can get to the file cabinets to file the "savers" away. Like I said, it's going to take awhile. But I'll get there!

Surfed a little today to locate some ideas for homemade ornaments. Just a set to put the year and our names on. Found more ideas than you can possibly imagine. Some are really cool!

Otherwise, worked on laundry and paperwork today mostly. Actually watched a couple of movies this afternoon also. The Black Book and The Fugitive. Had seen the Fugitive before but not for years so that was enjoyable!

Jimmy & Jessica should be getting home soon. They spent the weekend with her relatives after our dinner on Friday.

If I get chance today, I'll post some of the Thanksgiving photos that were taken last week.

November 25, 2006 - Sabbath

Bean dish for lunch and left over turkey and etc for supper. Just a relaxing day after. I actually slept for a couple hours this afternoon. Watched March of the Penguins this evening. That is a very interesting movie. Amazing what they do, I highly recommend it and for all ages. The younger children may not appreciate it as it is just watching a yearly ritual that the penguins do and narrated by Morgan Freeman. But school age and up would enjoy it.

November 24, 2006 - Friday

Had dinner with family yesterday, parents, brothers (2 of the 3) and their families. Visited with everyone including Jim's family and all. The day was just too short and seemed like before we knew it, it was over. Tired and melancholy, miss all my family but glad that we had chance for a short visit, rather than none at all! Cramming 6 months of news into 3 short hours or so!

Today we had another dinner. I had turkey, stuffing, macaroni, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, succotash and pumpkin pie for dessert. Plenty of leftovers for turkey salad and later on, turkey pot pie. Jessica helped me with the dinner so it went very smooth. They left for yet another dinner with her family tomorrow.

November 23, 2006 - Thursday

Happy Thanksgiving !!!!!!

November 22, 2006 - Wednesday

More housework, turkey is thawing, actually since yesterday. All else is ready mostly. I'm just busy again today and now tired. Nothing new. Worried that the rain would be bad today, but so far, steady but not heavy so lane has washed only a bit more. Still passable.

Today, if you were alive in 1963, you will remember exactly what you were doing when you heard the news about the assassination of President Kennedy. I was 12 years old and I remember.

November 21, 2006 - Tuesday

Another busy day, just getting ready for Thanksgiving. Worked in the kitchen mostly today, trying to clean off counter space and organize the cabinets. Busy, busy, busy.

November 20, 2006 - Monday

Did some PT today and ran some errands in town. Been working on some Christmas shopping little by little. Not much else new this week. Just busy.

November 19, 2006 - Sunday

Today I mostly worked in the kitchen trying to get the counters cleared off and grocery stuff put away. We watched a TV movie around 2 pm while we were eating lunch and I fell asleep as soon as I finished eating, so missed the ending. Typical.

Jim worked on Jimmy's car today and he now has heat!!!! He's really glad to have it, now that it's getting alot cooler, especially in the mornings. Then Jim got the leaves cleaned up out of most of the yard again. He was busy today, lots to do....

Me, I sorted some mail that had been piled on the kitchen table, did some dishes and did some minor organization of the closet in order to get groceries put away and cleaned off some counterspace as I mentioned up in the first paragraph. So routine day basically.

November 18, 2006 - Sabbath

Happy Birthday Shelly !!!!!!

Jim's watching for the Leonides tonight. It's an annual event where the "stars fall" to the earth. The peak is supposed to be around 11:45 pm tonight.

About 11:15 pm the clouds rolled over just enough that nothing could be seen. We'll hope for better luck next year....

November 17, 2006 - Friday

Jim and his friend worked on the lane until 11:30 pm last night. They put down one truckload of stones across the 25 foot washed out section and a few more feet at one bad spot just above the turn. The way it works is you hug the left side going down hill being careful not to let your passenger side tires slip into the 2 foot deep gulleys left by the water running down the hill. Then at the first stoned area cross over and hug the right side until you get through the 25 foot section that was washed away. Once you clear that rough area you have to go just a little further and you've made it to the common drive which isn't quite as bad. Awesome storm!

Jim also worked on it for awhile this morning and I was able to get my car out mid-morning. I worried about getting back in, but didn't have a problem, just had to remember where in the lane I needed to be on what side.

I didn't get a look at what trees were washed away as I went out the lane today in my car. I was too busy trying to make sure I didn't end up on my axle! I'll look next time I go out. Oh, yes, when you come in you just reverse the above procedure. Don't worry, hopefully, it will all be fixed in a week or so.

Oh, I forgot to mention about how happy we are that the woman wasn't placed into the position. Everyone said she would get it but she didn't. The Dem that got it is a reasonable man for the most part and I think the Dems made a good choice. And that's all I'm gonna say on the subject.

I ran into town and got stuff for my Thanksgiving dinner. I normally have turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, macaroni, succatash and pumpkin pie. Sounds good, doesn't it???? Jessica is helping me this year so I don't have to do all the work. We actually found this cool recipe for pumpkin cheesecake that we're going to make for dessert also. Looks good in the picture at least!

I love just going around in the stores, well, walmart for now, at this time of year. I love browsing through all the Christmas stuff. All the decorations and neat things! It's SO cool.

Well, I'm tired and still fighting my cold a little bit tonight, so will say goodnight.

November 16, 2006 - Thursday

Well, it's raining today! Power has gone out about 6 times but it came right back on. Then we had tornado watch until 6 pm, thunder and lightning and extremely heavy rain. Lost satellite connections for TV & computer for long periods of time, like 45 min stretches. Rain gauge overflowed at 6 inches and it was still raining very hard for another 2 hours, so I suspect we had about 8 + inches of rain.

Jim said the lane was under a "flowing stream" of water when he came home. The road near the post office was under water also. So it is pretty bad.

Jimmy didn't get off work until 7 pm tonight. There are two ways to come in to our house. The first way was waist deep in water, so he didn't try to come through that way. When he made it in via the North route, he couldn't get up our driveway. The creek had overflowed and taken out about 25 foot of our driveway. There are also what's left of trees that got washed out and went down and trailing vines across the driveway that have to be cut with a machete or something. Water level has gone down, but from the top part of our driveway there are 2+ foot deep gulleys where the water ran hard and fast downhill and cut the driveway, so it would be difficult or impossible to get out with even the truck. (Not counting the 25 foot section that is down to broken concrete blocks). Jim walked down in the dark to take a look and then started making phone calls. He won't make it out tomorrow to work. One of the men from work is coming over with stones and equipment to see if he can fix it enough that we can at least get out with the truck. But he is going to be away until next week, so the lane won't be fixed until next week. But we are lucky that he will be able to work on it next week, so we're very happy about that!!!

The bad news is that the culvert is also stopped up again, but one step at a time! First we've got to get something done with the deep gulleys and the 25 foot section that is gone. Then we'll have to work on the culvert again. What a mess. I feel for others who live in lower areas. I'm sure the rivers will flood as they so often do. The Rappahannock is forever flooding, so the folks who live in the flood areas will have trouble tonight.

The good news is that, although there was rotation reported less than 5 miles from our house, we had no tornadoes today, at least here. The other good news is that the other rotations were down south of us and moved off to the NNE from Tappahannock across the lower Northern Neck and I don't know if they dissapated at that point or not, since we lost TV for some time. More good news is that the front has moved on through and the sky is clear tonight. So the rain is over for now. And we didn't lose power for any length of time. Hallelujah!

It's almost 10 pm and Jim is down the lane with the man, working on it, hoping to at least get it so we can get out in the truck. My car, well, it may be awhile before I can get out. I'll be sitting on my axle if I try to go down and straddle the gulleys. I'll write more when Jim comes back up tonight.

See it's not all bad news!!!

November 15, 2006 - Wednesday

Happy Birthday Joey !!!!!!

It was supposed to rain today, but it didn't, so I took the opportunity to run the garbage to the dump and some town errands. Had a couple prescriptions and a few miscellaneous items to pick up. Didn't start raining until late in the evening, and really just "spitting" nothing major.

Another PT session and they've had to back off on my stuff. I'm not sure why, but when the therapist was feeling the achilles, she wanted to talk to the doctor again and they dropped several of my "routines" including the exercise bike, "for now"....

I do swell up quite abit and they are icing it each time they do anything. It's been more sore this week than it has been for awhile. Actually had to elevate it a couple times today. Interesting.

November 14, 2006 - Tuesday

Routine day, ankle swollen due to PT but otherwise all is well. My cold is a little better today, though my voice is hoarse and I'm starting to cough abit. Not real bad, but I'm supposed to sing this week and I fear my throat will not be cleared up enough. Time will tell. I'll have to make a decision by Thursday at the latest to give them time for someone else to do it.

So let me tell you about the lane....The water is still over the lane in one spot, so Jim and I went down there to see what might need to be done. The lane comes down from a high point in the common drive, goes downhill over a culvert and still continues downhill for another 25-30 feet before starting back up hill on a sharp corner. Where the culvert is, it's about 6-8 feet down from the lane to the creek and above the creek a couple of feet is a 24 inch culvert for when the creek might flood. Well, what has happened is the culvert is plugged tight, water is barely going through. So all those inches of rain we had on Sunday backed up over the banks of the creek, into the woods and ran across the lane at the lower point in the driveway, as if the creek was trying to cut a new path.

The water at the culvert had to be over 5 foot deep so it was not a place for us to fall into, plus with the culvert there, you don't want to get caught in the water if it breaks loose and starts to flow. So Jim worked from the embankment with a 12 foot piece of tree trying to see if he could clear the mouth of the culvert. At one point the water started flowing a little harder on the other side of the lane and then, whoosh, it broke loose and water poured out like crazy. In about 20 minutes, our "pond" had gone down over 2 foot and was no longer over the embankments of the creek. But now we hear there might be more rain coming later this week......

November 13, 2006 - Monday

Felt a little better today. Had PT and Doctor's appointments today so spent the day in town. Tiring, especially when I'm not 100%. PT is coming along. My ankle swells up with any activity so they had to "ice" it again for 15 minutes afterwards. Otherwise, it's fine. Doesn't hurt while doing the stuff, sometimes a little pulling or stinging. Later some minor aching and swelling, nothing serious.

Doctor's appointment was my routine 3 month checkup and blood tests. No problems and nothing abnormal. Only blood test was for thyroid and liver function which have to be checked every 3 months due to the meds I'm on. So no biggy.

Still too dreary to work on the "flood" across our lane and it's still over my head in the woods area where the creek should be! So we'll see if it has gone down some tomorrow.

November 12, 2006 - Sunday

Sore throat. I've caught the cold that is racing through our household. UGH. Don't feel good at all.

Rained so hard the creek overflowed the banks and the culvert is plugged under the driveway. The water is over my head and comes through the woods and is running overtop of our lane. So we'll have to do something about it when the weather clears up. It's underwashing our driveway a little bit.

November 11, 2006 - Sabbath

Quiet day. Beautiful weather. Read, watched some 3ABN and not much else today.

Dad called to tell me about a "cousin's" 2 year old that died Thursday. The child choked on a pretzel. So please remember my cousins' family in your prayers during this terrible time.

November 10, 2006 - Friday

Today is the official government holiday for Veteran's Day. The actual day is tomorrow. Please remember our Veteran's both past and present, who sacrificed so much that we may have our freedoms.

Again, another fairly routine day, laundry, housework, worked on some paperwork again, trying to clean out the piles of papers that should be tossed or filed or something. It's hard since I hate to throw away stuff. I might need it someday, or keep it to get an idea for something someday....you know? But I'm trying to "bite the bullet" and toss stuff that I really don't need. I have to be in the right mood to do it or it will just go in the pile to be filed somewhere. Obviously, today, I'm NOT in the right mood. I want to save stuff....

Jessica fixed us a delicious chicken dinner again tonight! That girl can REALLY cook!!! We enjoyed it thoroughly!!! A perfect end to a good week.

November 9, 2006 - Thursday

Jimmy was pretty sick on his birthday. Has a terrible cold. His boss at work wanted to send him home yesterday but he said no that he would make it. Well, this morning he got up around 7 am, (he went to sleep as soon as he came home and ate some chicken soup last night), and he was still feeling really bad, so he called his boss and she had already started rescheduling his "clients" for the day, knowing how sick he was on Weds. So he stayed home, stayed warm and was feeling a little better by night time.

So other than running some laundry, runnning garbage to the dump, picking up some bread and odds n' ends and doing routine stuff like meals and dishes, it was a quiet day. We watched a couple episodes of "Firefly" on DVD in the evening and some other stuff we had previously recorded earlier in the week. Then hit the sack.

November 8, 2006 - Wednesday

Happy Birthday Jimmy !!!!!!

November 7, 2006 - Tuesday

Started Physical Therapy today. I went in with the attitude that I was only going to try it once to learn the exercises and stuff. But I have a wonderful therapist and I think I'll stick with it for a few weeks. What she did today seemed to help some already, though my ankle is a little sore tonight. After they worked through some exercises, they had to "ice" my ankle for a while, since it swelled up abit. But they never pushed me past what I could deal with. They were very careful to keep asking me if it was hurting at all. So I'm very pleased. She also said that before they are done with me, I'll be able to walk on the treadmill again! In fact, they will have me doing it there before I'm "released" from the therapy! I had hoped that I could get so I could walk with minimal pain and no cane. But they seem to think I'll do even better than that!!!! So HURRAY!!!!

It's actually 12:30 am Wednesday morning. As the elections stand, Democrats need to earn 3 more seats in order to take the Senate. The battlefields are Tennessee, Montana, Missouri and Virginia.

Basically, the TV networks have declared that Tennessee will go Republican. So the Democrats have to take all three of the other states. Thirty minutes ago, it looked impossible, but now they are saying that Montana, even with only 28% of the vote counted, will go Democrat. Currently, Missouri has a Republican in the lead, but St. Louis votes have not been counted and they are historically Democrat. So the networks are saying the Democrats will also get Missouri.

Virginia. Well, TV networks are saying that Webb, the Democrat is ahead by 2400 votes, with 98% of the vote counted. However, George Allen's group contacted FOX and said that the "feed" of numbers going to the major networks is incorrect. The numbers had been "reversed" and that Allen is actually 5,000-6,000 votes ahead of Webb. Obviously, there will be a recount, since it is mandatory when the vote is less than a 1% difference anyway. However, as TV has stated, rarely will a recount change vote counts more than 800 votes in this type of election.

The biggest thing that I see about this election which has been true in recent elections, is that the major networks, like ABC, NBC & CBS literally sway elections. The way they do it is by picking on a topic and beating the public over their heads about it and make the election about an issue that THEY choose. In this case, it was the War in Iraq. We have literally been innudated over the last few weeks about how voting FOR Republicans is a vote FOR the war in Iraq. No one is FOR the war. But sometimes war has to be. If we don't stop the terrorists in their home territory, they will come here to kill us. That's what they want to do. So our brave young men and women sacrifice to protect us and our way of life here in this country, by going overseas to take the fight to the enemy camps. None of us want war, but to preserve our freedoms, our very existance, sometimes war is necessary. Voting Republican, is simply voting for the person you feel represents your best interests, your values and way of life.

And don't get me started on the Exit Polls. They always do those in the cities where the votes are notoriously Democrat. That's why the TV networks predicted Kerry had won back in 2004, when the truth of it was that Bush won, hands down.

So, the House has been taken back by the Democrats. It was predicted as such and apparently that prediction was correct. The Senate, well, could be they take it as well.

For us, here in Virginia, a win for Webb will not be so bad. Both candidates were fairly decent. Both would do their best for the Commonwealth. Personally, though I voted for Allen, I think Webb will do OK by us, if he is announced the winner. The real loss however, is the Senate seat, going to the Democrats. They have whined for years that nothing is being done by Congress, since it has gone Republican. Yet they were in office for quite a few years and we see that they also didn't accomplish much, only raises and bonuses for themselves. Personally, I feel they make way too much money and have benefits that go beyond what they should get. But that holds true for both parties.

Should the Democrats be proud? Well, they have the major networks in their pockets. They have fooled the majority of the country. They use our hard earned money and say they are for the little man. Liars, many of them. I'm not condoning the behavior of all the Republicans either. The Senator in Pennsylvania, Republican, threw his seat away by having an affair. Another Democrat that won campaigned as anti-abortion and pro-gun. So it's a win for the Democrats, but he really ran on the Republican issues. So to me, that's a win for the Republicans, if he was truthful. I don't know many of the ones that ran, especially in other states. But here in Virginia, we'll be OK, no matter the outcome or the final counts. The House & Senate? Well, that's another story. We'll see if they can do anything over the next few years.

November 6, 2006 - Monday

Isn't it funny how the TV networks talk about the upcoming elections? They say the south votes heavily Republican because of all the Evangelicals there. WHAT???? How about just good old, down to earth, hard working, honest, church going people? Hey folks, maybe we need to move some Evangelicals up North into the "Blue" states, to get this country back to where it belongs!

Worked on stuff around the house today, laundry and paperwork. Not much else going on. Looking forward to staying up and watching all the election stuff!!!

November 5, 2006 - Sunday

Routine, ran some laundry and currently working on lunch. Plan on coninuing the "de-clutter" of my music room, which means going through stacks of magazines, catalogs and papers, some to be filed, some to be tossed. It's a sorting thing and it is slow.

Watched "Memoirs of a Geisha", a movie. It was very interesting. Takes place around WWII time period and really is a whole different way of life or culture. Very unusual.

I finished reading Exodus today. The last part of Exodus has alot of detail about the children of Israel and building the sanctuary, while wandering in the desert. God gave very specific details as to each piece of furniture and curtain and how it was to be made and what it was to be made of and so on. I'll start on Leviticus tomorrow. I'm trying to read several chapters each day as well as all the other reading that I do. I was supposed to have started in January, which I did, but by February I had stopped. So back in September I started at the beginning again in Genesis 1:1. So I'm proud of my "sticking to it" this time. I also just finished "First Impressions" by Jude Deveraux. I read daily from several other books also but you can read those accomplishments at the end of each month (which I started logging in September of this year.)

My brother, Earl, called yesterday from California and Seth called today from New Mexico. Jimmy and Jessica made it home from the Open House at the college and seemed to really enjoy themselves! They brought me a cup from the college, to add to my collection!!!! It's very pretty.

Didn't sing in church this week, one of the trio had a bad cold. It's going around, that's for sure!!! Hopefully, we'll all be well next week.

Jim worked on the CW contest until he had over 200 contacts between last night and today, so he enjoyed that alot. Hasn't had much time in the last few months to do something HE enjoys! He's had to wait on me so much. So I'm glad the timing was right and he was able to get on the air for a few hours.

Overall, I'd say we had a very nice weekend! The weather is cooler and sunny with the leaves just past their peak colors. Fall and continuing into the holidays, my favorite time of year!

November 4, 2006 - Sabbath

Jimmy & Jessica went to one of the colleges that they are looking at for Open House today. Jimmy called when they arrived and said it was really nice. They toured the campus and got to see the areas of specific interest to each of them. They'll be back tomorrow.

Otherwise a quiet day, we actually read and fell asleep on the sofa this afternoon. And now, of course, I'm on the computer. Jim is working a CW contest tonight. No other news today.

November 3, 2006 - Friday

Did a little shopping and I'm quite tired. The one store's only available electric cart had a dead battery, so I walked leaning on a regular cart. But it really hurt to do that much walking. Well, it's done and the other stores had carts available, which I used and that helped out alot.

I forgot to mention that I found a good used book store this week. In fact, there are a couple of them in town! So now I have no excuse, I can trade in some of my stockpile of novels. I had taken just a small bag with me and traded them in at the first store, once I learned the policy there. I managed to get several "new" ones that I haven't read plus I found some art & painting books that I didn't have. So I'm very pleased to find the store. Actually Jim found it for me!

I didn't go there today as I haven't read the ones I picked up yet. But it's so nice to have a place that I can go to trade in and get other books!

There was something else I was going to journal tonight, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was, so it must not have been important. I'll think about it tomorrow!

November 2, 2006 - Thursday

I feel like I got something accomplished today. Can you see it in my house? NO. BUT! I know I got some things done and that's all that counts. I continued going through old catalogs and tossing them into the trash!!! That's an accomplishment!

Still have a ton to go through but that's for another day!

November 1, 2006 - Wednesday

You may wonder why the owls in trees with a rifle? And you may also wonder why ducks? Well, last year I had a turkey background for the November journal and I wanted to do something different this year. So in honor of hunting season, you turkeys beware. And the ducks? Well, I just thought they were cute.

Besides, you could say that the owls are standing guard over my turkey who is sorting the email at the bottom of this page. If you have to have a story or a reason.....

This is the anniversary of one of my sister-in-law's death. Denie died 15 years ago (1991) this evening. I was there with her at home and I still miss her. She was a special lady. Coincidentally, it is the anniversary of the burial of my mom on this date. She died on Oct 29th, 1965 and was buried on November 1, 1965. Forty-one years ago today was her funeral and burial. I have pages in memory of both Denie and my Mom on this website.

Routine day at the Price household. Nothing new that I'll write about publicly in this journal anyway.

And of course for you Christmas lover's out there!!!! Only 53 days left until the big day!!!!
