April 30, 2007 - Monday
Well, what can I say about Mondays? I work on housework and laundry for the most part. And that's exactly what I did. Then I ripped another audiobook cassette while doing some more housework and cooking supper. May sound boring to some, but hey, it's my life. Nothing else new. Got kinda warm this afternoon, upper 80's. There was a breeze but it died out early evening, so it's pretty warm and humid feeling now. Will be worse tomorrow but supposedly cooler on Wednesday. We shall see. It's almost time to start that good old AC. I don't handle humidity well. Can't breathe, can't sleep, causes me all kinds of aggravation. I just don't handle heat and humidity well. It turns my sweet disposition into a contrary whatever. I want cool and cold. Hurry winter, hurry fast.
It's the end of the month so I'll post some of my doin's for the month of April.

April 29, 2007 - Sunday
Jim and I spent a nice afternoon in town. Haven't done that in quite awhile. We ate at a Wendy's and it was very good. Shopped in a couple of our favorite stores. Got some stuff to "summerize" the house. You know, ant and bug sprays, stuff for my flowers, etc. Just an enjoyable day in town.
It was bright and sunny and a cool breeze keeping the temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's range. Very pleasant day to shop and be outside.
April 28, 2007 - Sabbath
Nice day, sunny with puffy cumulous clouds all around. It warmed up as the afternoon wore on but all in all a nice day. Some changes going on with the kids but all is well. Keeping busy and all that stuff. I read and watched some religious programing in the afternoon. I think I even took a short nap too. Nothing new, so no news is good news, yada yada yada.....
April 27, 2007 - Friday
Well, I woke up ambitious today. I ironed some shirts while it was raining. Then the rain dwindled down to a spritz so I went outside and planted 224 flower bulbs! Yep. 224. Dutch Iris, gladiolas, ranunculus, anemones and lilies. 224.
Now here's the thing. After two hours of digging holes for all the bulbs, I decided to just dig a long shallow trench for the gladiolas. They only need to be about 4 inches in the ground. So I dug my trench, about 12 feet long or so. And began laying the small bulbs in the trench a few inches apart. When I was about ¾ of the way down the row, I heard a "crunch, crunch" and looked back to see a mouse eating one of the bulbs. I jumped up and when he saw me, he grabbed that bulb and pulled it right down into his mouse hole! Wish I'd had a camera. So I planted 224 bulbs, but I suspect that the one row of gladiolas will never show up. That mouse will go right down the row and eat every single one of those bulbs! Gr-r-r-r-r.
Nah, it really was funny, wish I could've caught it all on camera. Funniest home videos, you know?
April 26, 2007 - Thursday
I was supposed to do something today but the event was cancelled so I didn't have to show up. So I had a routine Thursday after all.
Still coughing but feeling a whole lot better!
April 25, 2007 - Wednesday
Worked on laundry and some organizing ideas. Seems like 24 hours is shorter now than it was 10 years ago!!!!
A little bit cooler this morning, in the mid to uppers 70's all afternoon. Then around 4 pm the humidity came back and temps went up just a bit. We had storms pass to the north of us but we didn't get anything here at our house. The sky was definitely a dark blue-black however.
April 24, 2007 - Tuesday
Routine day, housework and such. Finished reading Isaiah last night. I found that to be a tough read, I had to slow down and concentrate on every word. I realize that it is alot of things about Israel during the various kings and times that Israel didn't obey God. Towards the end of Isaiah is prophecy about the heaven and the new earth which I found to be rather revealing also. But that's a discussion for another day, another webpage....
It was hot and humid here today. I don't know what the high temperature was, but when I looked at 4 pm it was 87° with about 78% humidity. Too much humidity for me. I honestly believe I could tolerate the heat if there was alot less humidity. Well, it's supposed to cool down tonight. That's the nice thing about this time of year in Virginia.
April 23, 2007 - Monday
Finally, I felt a lot better today!!! Still have a terrible cough and can't talk very well. The "bug" has definitely settled in my chest, so I'm short of breath when I try to do routine things around the house. However, today is the first day in over a week that I can honestly say I feel better! So I'll take what I can get!!!!
I watched the Virginia Tech tribute this morning on TV to the victims who died last Monday. It was extremely moving. They gathered on the Drill Field and a bell tolled for each victim. A white balloon was released after each toll and then at the end the balloons for the victims in the school colors of orange and maroon.
Jim pointed out an important thing. Those students who decided not to return to the campus this semester will have no "closure" on this terrible tragedy. Not that anyone will ever forget. It's just that the students that were there today faced up to the sadness and the fact that things will never be as they were before. When they return next fall, they've already had a sense of closure on this. Whereas, the students who chose to stay home, if and when they return, even if they never return, they missed out on a sense of community, of others having and feeling the same horror and sadness and memories of that fateful day.
Since I was sick all week, I didn't have the chance to write up my thoughts on that horrible day. I've had nightmares about it ever since it happened. I've watched all of the stories unfolding on TV. There will be more to discuss another day. More about the after effects. More about the gun control battles that are sure to arise in the political arena. More about the killer and his motives, his obvious emotional state of mind. And I will discuss these later. But for now I want to focus on the students of Virginia Tech. My oldest son, Seth is alumni of VT. He graduated in 2005 and knew some of the victims that died as well as some that survived. It goes without saying that this affected him tremendously as an alumni. It affected all of us, here in the state of Virginia, more than you can imagine. But the campus of VT is a wonderful place, a close community.
I was so impressed with the students on campus. The confusion, the horror. Yet no matter what the news media asked, the students were like a family. They are survivors. They spoke intelligently and politely to the world. They expressed the horror of the day, the grief they all shared, the stories of the survivors, of the victims and the anxiety of friends and acquaintenances that were still not accounted for. Some reporters asked respectful questions, some even asked good questions. Some reporters asked stupid questions. But through it all the Virginia Tech students were consistently wonderful. I was very impressed with their ability to handle the press in such horrific circumstances. Through it all, the Virginia Tech students showed a wonderful sense of solidarity for their police force, the faculty, the school and for their fallen friends and professors. Though the campus is large, the community is tight and you could see that in their faces, in their interviews with the media, in their grief.
In less than a year there will be at least two movies about the horror. There will be months of TV programs analyzing and re-evaluating Monday's events. Psychologists will be on TV constantly dissecting the mind of the killer. Everyone wonders why. Why would a young man do such a horrible thing? How could he be so cold as to just systematically kill so many fellow students and professors? Personally, while I would like to understand, I really don't care about the killer. It's so very tragic for his own family, but more so for the innocent victims and their families. Giving this nutcase airtime is exactly what he wished for as he pulled the trigger over and over again. It was all about him. Selfish, self-centered and totally uncaring for others, not even his own family. But enough about him. The real horror is the innocent loss of life. And those who survived have the most to deal with. If you don't believe it, just ask any returning soldier about what they have been through during a battle or a war. Seeing the deaths of your friends is a horror almost too great to imagine. To know that you almost became one of the victims is an additional horror. You wonder WHY you survived when others around you died. You wonder HOW you survived. Many will wonder what they could've done to stop the killer. Some will wonder if they could've done something to help save at least one other classmate or faculty member. Those students who were saved by their professor holding the door while they jumped out of 2nd story windows and knowing the professor died saving many of their lives, have alot to deal with but alot to be thankful for. Those who didn't jump, who remained in the room, didn't survive. The survivors will wonder. They will replay that horrible day, those horrible moments over and over again wondering if they did enough, worrying that they didn't. But I say they are heros regardless. No other word for it.
But each person must deal with the memories of that day in their own way. Those who survived, who were in the midst of the killings, will have a tougher time dealing with it. It will probably give them nightmares for the rest of their lives. I cannot imagine the horror of that morning. Nor do I want to. But I do know that you can overcome some of the worst memories by keeping true to yourself, trusting in a God who is there for us especially in the hard times and with friends and family to stand by you through it all. So my heart aches for each and every person involved, both the victims families and friends, as well as the survivors. Hopefully, the survivors will understand that though most of us will never experience such horrors, we still are praying and hoping for peace in each of their lives. Whether they saved others lives, whether they managed to save themselves by jumping or pretending to be shot, lying amongst the bodies. It doesn't matter. Nothing else could've been done. Nothing short of like force could've stopped the killer. Noone could've been prepared for such a day. Survival was key. Some never had a chance. Some were given a second chance in life. Those who died and those that survived, they are heros, each and every one of them.
April 22, 2007 - Sunday
Still sick, actually felt a little worse today. Took meds and slept and watched TV most of the day. I need to get feeling better somehow, someway......
April 21, 2007 - Sabbath
Still sick. Slept in and taking meds. Bad cough and cold has settled in my chest. I'm getting tired of being sick.
April 20, 2007 - Friday
Even though I'm still sick, I went grocery shopping for a few items. But most of all to pick up some more cold medicines.
April 19, 2007 - Thursday
Jim is starting to feel a little better, still coughing alot though. Jimmy is still feeling not so good, but going to work and classes anyway. Me, well, I'm still sick. Coughing all night and day. That's really the biggest problem. If I could sleep at night without coughing all night, I'd probably be feeling alot better. Time for meds.....
April 18, 2007 - Wednesday
Still sick. Felt worse today than yesterday. Will write more when feeling better.
April 17, 2007 - Tuesday
I will write more about the loss of life at Virginia Tech at a later date. It's so sad for not only the families and friends, the school, faculty, the Blacksburg community, the Commonwealth of Virginia but for this whole country. It's unfathomable, unimaginable and totally devastating.
I'm still sick, so is Jimmy. Jim is starting to feel a little better but still not 100%. We ran out of medicine so Jim stopped and picked up some more on the way home. I only slept for about 3 hours last night due to all the coughing.
April 16, 2007 - Monday
What can I say about today's tragedy. 32 innocent victims plus the killer lost their lives today on the Virginia Tech campus. My heart aches for the families and friends of the innocent victims and for the family of the boy who commited these murders. The worst killings in this countries history.
April 15, 2007 - Sunday
Still sick. All of us. Jim is feeling a little better than Jimmy or I. But he's been sick longer, so that would make sense.
Stayed inside today, due to being sick, of course. We had rain and now a little wind. Rainfall at 8 pm was 1.5". Not as much as had been predicted, but radar shows more rain to come, so we'll have a better total tomorrow.
Man, I hate being sick.
April 14, 2007 - Sabbath
I added the Happy Friday the 13th to yesterdays journal. That's why I got sick. Should've known, Friday the 13th.
I was hoping to plant my bulbs and seed yesterday, but just felt to sick to do much of anything. It's going to be raining cats and dogs tomorrow and maybe Monday, so probably won't get it done until Tuesday or Wednesday. Hint: Doesn't matter, I'm too sick to do it anyway! Hopefully, before the end of this month I'll get it done!
We're all still feeling pretty bad but we'll survive. It is just a head-chest cold. It's just that when you move around you cough. If you lay down, you cough. If you sit down, you cough. After awhile, you just get sore from coughing so much. But we've had worse, so we really can't complain. Good news is, I'm really catching up on alot of sleep. Bad news is, I'm really sleeping alot. Just "Be Gone Oh Stupid Cold; Be Gone Oh Miserable Cough". OK, time for more meds....
April 13, 2007 - Friday
Happy Friday the 13th!
OK. So it wasn't asthma getting to me. I've caught the dreaded chest cold. Again. Feeling poor. Jimmy also has caught it. So we're all sick officially. Jim is functioning, coughing alot. I'm functioning, only when medicated and before sleep, since the meds make me sleep. Blessed sleep, not coughing while sleeping and medicated! Jimmy's the same as me, though since he is younger, he functions better than either of us!
Dad said there is a bad storm coming our way. I hadn't been following the weather this week, since I hadn't been feeling very good. Jim checked the net to see how close and found out that it's supposed to be a 20 year nor'easter. You know, they're saying we haven't had one this bad in 20 years. Joy. Nothing like being sick and having winter time hurricane go through. Supposed to get about 3" of rain and some 45 mph wind, gusts higher. I'm hoping we won't lose power or trees etc and that our lane doesn't wash away again. Not going to worry. Doesn't do any good. Hm-m-m-m. Time for more meds. Git 'er done. See ya!
April 12, 2007 - Thursday
I have a little congestion in my chest but nothing like Jim has. He is still feeling really bad but again he went to work. By the time he got home he was exhausted. I think the reason I'm so tired is because he is not sleeping well which keeps me restless also. He can't help it and I know how it is since I had the same type of bug back in January and February, lingering into March! It's a nasty chest congestion and cough that seems to last forever.
I think that the congestion I have is just the usual asthma problems I have every spring when the trees start to get leaves and the grass begins to grow. Hopefully, not another round of this bug that Jim has.
Something got onto the bird platform, opened the suet cage and took the suet. We suspect Mr. Raccoon, since he is a good size critter and probably the only thing that could climb up onto the platform. Jim squirrel-proofed it years ago and we've not had any squirrels get on there for years now. Well, the tiny flying night squirrels do occasionally, but they aren't much bigger than a chipmunk so they couldn't carry off that big suet.
We've noticed lately that sometimes the big log has been knocked over also, so that would explain it. Mr. Raccoon has been coming up to eat Foxy's food also in the evenings, so I suspect he is making his home in the area.
The other clue is, if a bird, such as a bluejay or crow had opened the cage, the suet would still be laying around somewhere nearby. It's not. I searched for it.
I did get some more seed today. Seems like the stores are also raising prices on stuff like that. Used to be rather inexpensive. But once people start buying it, the prices just seem to go up and up.
April 11, 2007 - Wednesday
Jim is still feeling really bad but he went to work anyway today. When he came home he just kinda "crashed" for the evening. I basically did the same thing when he came home. I had pushed to bag garbage up and load it in the car. I ran laundry and did some basic stuff around the house, but when he came home we both crashed for a while on the sofa to watch some TV. Then I fell asleep for about an hour and a half.
April 10, 2007 - Tuesday
Jim is still sick. I'm not feeling real good either. Looks like all of us may be coming down with the cold. Ugh.
April 9, 2007 - Monday
Still in the 40's today, but supposed to warm up tomorrow and Wednesday. Jim is still pretty sick, lungs are really congested. So he's feeling pretty miserable right now.
I cannot believe the costs of gasoline. Just over a week ago I filled up my car and the cost was $2.45 per gallon. Friday, when I filled up it was $2.65 per gallon. A 20¢ price increase in little over a week. Greed, greed, greed by the oil companies and the management thereof. And then you hear on the news about the executive of one of the oil companies got a $400 million bonus this year or something like that, I'll have to locate the exact quote and amount. It makes you SICK. I'm going to start posting gas prices for local stations like many others are doing. Now I ask you, why do we as a country put up with this? Come on, you geniuses out there, think of a way that we can get the oil companies to come down in their greedy prices.
Maybe an alternative to gas? Somehow, somewhere? What about just buying gas only when you find a station below a certain price???? There's got to be a way to get these greedy executives to, what? Not be so greedy???
Sorry, just had to spout off my 2¢'s on the subject of rising gas prices. The power company locally is going to raise their prices by 4%. That's reasonable, especially since they haven't raised their prices since 2004, three years ago. Course, gas still isn't as expensive as milk. Can you believe that a gallon of 2% milk is almost $4.00 now? I typically pay between $3.29 - $3.79 per gallon. So I guess gas is trying to be like the dairy business. Course I use alot more gas than I do milk. And it's like sodas, when the price reaches a certain point, I just won't buy it so much anymore. I only buy sodas on sale, never full price. Milk, gas, it's all going to be the same. I don't work, so I don't have to drive if I don't want to.
Higher gas prices just mean I don't go shopping as much or traveling as much. So not only do I not spend as much money on gas, but I also don't go to the stores as much or traveling to visit others as much. It just means that not only do the gas companies lose my little dollars, but so do Wal-Mart, grocery stores, hobby stores, toll roads and bridges and so on. How about that? After all, nowadays, if you really want something, you can order it online and have it shipped almost cheaper than going to a store to buy it. And it just means that I order only what I need, unlike when I go to the store and buy stuff that I don't need, just because I'm there! Maybe that's it! Just don't go shopping anymore! Hey, Jim, my husband, will like that one too!!!!
There. I've solved the gas problem.
Routine Monday otherwise, worked on the kitchen and laundry and my room full of papers. Also spent some time re-ripping the first 6 cassettes that I had done previously. I didn't know how to adjust the thingy for the sound thingy, which caused the first few to sound muffled on playback. So, after Jim showed me last week how to adjust it, I decided to redo the first few to make a better recording. What a difference! Now at least you can listen to them without squinting your ears! But it is time consuming since each side of each cassette takes 45 - 55 minutes to do. So you can imagine re-doing 6 full cassettes takes several days. Especially since I don't have all day to devote to it. But it's started anyway.
Only have about 200 more cassettes to do.........
April 8, 2007 - Sunday
Happy Easter !!!!
It got down in the upper 20's last night, I haven't checked to see the exact low, but it was cold enough that I broke out the blankets that I had just put away for the winter. With Jim sick, I felt like we needed them anyway, so they're out for another week or so. I think it will start to warm up around Tuesday or Wednesday this week and at least be more seasonable.
We watched some TV last night and I caught up on some of my email. Otherwise it was a quiet evening.
Jessica and I are going to do a turkey dinner today for supper in celebration of Easter. That will be nice. Probably have mashed potatoes, limas or succotash, sweet potatoes, macaroni, rolls and gravy. You know, the works! I'll log more afterwards, later tonight.
Great dinner, had mixed veggies instead of the limas but otherwise as planned. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
April 7, 2007 - Sabbath
Well, I was wrong. We had almost 2" of snow. When the NWS called me this morning, I hadn't measured it, so I told them 1". It was a pretty snow, heavy and wet, had the trees bowed down pretty good. Then Jimmy told me that it was closer to 2" when he got up earlier. So I stand corrected!
Jim is down with a bad chest cold and had a rough night as far as trying to sleep. He's taking a nap now since he didn't get alot of sleep last night.
It's only 36° outside at 2 pm! We have a freeze warning for again tonight through 10 am tomorrow morning. Supposed to get down into the 20's tonight. Glad I didn't hang out my flowers last night!
So I looked through the bulbs and seeds that I bought yesterday and here's what I got. For the Bulbs: 12 Iris (mixed); 24 Ranunculus (mixed); 5 Lilies (mixed); 28 Gladiolas (mixed); 3 Iris (blue & white); 80 Dutch Iris (mixed); 80 Anemone (mixed). Then seed packets: Geranium (dwarf florist, mixed colors); Marigold (safari mix); Zinnia (cut & come again mix); Pansy (swiss giants mix); Impatiens (flavours hybrid mix); Sunflower (mammoth).
Hopefully, later this week I'll get the bulbs in the ground and start the seeds indoors. It's supposed to warm up mid-week. Guess I was a little ambitious, since I haven't done any yard or gardening work in quite a few years. But figured I've got to start somewhere and sometime, right? Why not now? So here we go....
April 6, 2007 - Friday
Whew. Busy day. Had some more shopping to do so ran to several stores all over town. My legs are aching tonight but that's to be expected with all the walking I did! It's a good ache?
Seth called and was happy that he got JoAnna's car running again! So that helps them out on their Storm Chase plans for this year!!! Good job, Seth!!!!
So today is Good Friday and this is Easter weekend. So many specials on TV about the Crucifixion. We watched a part of one of them this evening. I would love to see the entire play sometime. It will probably be on TV again over the weekend so hopefully I'll catch it.
I got inspired today while shopping. This time of year, each year, I buy a hanging geranium for outside, for the hummingbirds. This year, I got a couple of them, very bright red! Very pretty. However. I can't put them out for several days. The reason I bought them today instead of next week is because I was afraid that they would either be sold out or left out the next few nights. The next few nights are going to be surprisingly cold. Especially for here in Virginia! We're supposed to get an inch or more of SNOW tonight. Yes, you heard, or read me right. SNOW. Maybe another ½" tomorrow! I don't believe it. It's been too warm this past couple of weeks. Yes, it might flurry. Yes, I suppose the ground could be cold enough to turn a little white overnight. Maybe. We shall see.
Up in Westminster, we often got snow in April. A couple times it flurried in May. But not here in Virginia. OK, maybe over by the Appalachians, but not here in the Southeastern part of the State. I just can't believe it.
Anyway, I'm drifting. I bought the geraniums and will keep them inside until next week when it warms up. But then I was looking at all the spring bulbs and seeds and that's when I got INSPIRED. So I got some lilies, dahlias, iris and some other odds and ends to plant. I also got some seeds to start indoors for pansies, impatiens, sunflowers, etc. So maybe, just maybe, I'll get stuff started next week. Bulbs in the ground, seeds started indoors. Man, like old times!
I'm SO EXCITED!!!!
I'll be looking forward to fall when I can plant more jonquils, tulips, grape hyacinths, crocus and hyacinths etc. also!!!! I particularly love the spring flowers that are really the fall bulbs to plant! There's nothing prettier than a yard full of crocus peeping up in the early spring or a row of red tulips along the sidewalk and my yellow jonquils along the edges of the woods and around the yard. So cool!!!!
Actually, I have jonquils planted along my sidewalk and tulips between them. The jonquils come up first. Then just as the jonquils are finished the red tulips come up and bloom next. Here is the photo of the jonquils first. You can see the tulips are almost up on the other side of the sidewalk. Later I'll add a photo of the tulips in full bloom.

Jonquils, first sign of spring at our house

April 5, 2007 - Thursday
I've added 3 more photos to the Music Photos webpage. Just some that were taken by others at church when I sang. Yes, I cut my hair. And guess what? It's shorter now than in the photos. Darker too.
Not much else new, just working on stuff around the house as usual. I did run to town to pick up a few items today. But other than that, it was a routine Thursday. The temperatures are in the low 50's. Actually, it's 4 pm currently and we have 48°. I LOVE IT!!!!!
April 4, 2007 - Wednesday
Just a busy day around the house. Reorganizing some furniture and miscellaneous hobby stuff. I love my hobbies, but I just have too many. So it gets to the point that I don't have space to work on any of them. Problem is I want to have them all out and visible and easy to access so that when I have a spare moment I could work on them. Trouble is, I pile things up and then can't find what I want to work on, when I want to work on it. And if I find it, I don't have a bare surface to work on it. Also I tend to be a pack rat, saving everything, just in case I need it someday. So I'm trying to find a place for everything. If I can't find a place for something, I'm going to toss it or give it away or sell it. So I'm sorting through my various hobbies, putting away the stuff I would definitely not want to get rid of, first. Then what's left over, hey. Who knows. Maybe I'll list it on eBay. Actually alot of the stuff I save is not worth anything. Scrap paper for scrapbooking, pieces of photos that have been cut already for scrapbooking. Duplicate copies of songwords, you know, stuff like that. So sort, file and toss. That's my motto right now.
We got thunderstorms last night, not bad ones, and abit of rain. Didn't have my gauge out, but the ground was dry under the vehicles this morning, so I'm guesstimating not much. Now the temps have dropped into the 50's today. Much nicer!!!
April 3, 2007 - Tuesday
Decided that I wanted to take a painting class at the local hobby store. Well, I didn't sign up ahead of time, since I wasn't sure whether I would get to town or not. So I got there and the class had been cancelled since no one had signed up. The clerk told me that the instructor would teach it, even if only one person signed up. So I'll know better for the next time it is scheduled.
April 2, 2007 - Monday
As you can see, I've ceased to include the Weird State Laws in this daily journal. You will find those (eventually) on the new State pages which will be partially online by this summer. I will probably add something else to these daily journals at a later date. You'll know it when you see it.
It's so funny how at the beginning of the month I'm so very careful about logging all my accomplishments. But towards the end of the month I completely forget to mark things down. Especially things like TV specials or other miscellaneous household accomplishments, no matter how small or large or time consuming they have been. For example, in March I had filed a whole drawer full of genealogy things that have needed to be filed for months. Not a biggy compared to what one would have to do at a job or even in the overall picture of what needs to be done. But for me, it took a day and a half and it was a big job. It was an ACCOMPLISHMENT! But did I log it on my accomplishments document? NO. So, here, by mentioning it in this daily journal, it is duly noted.
It's a Monday, so what can I say? Housework, ripping cassettes, more sorting and filing of various papers. Routine day. It is a gorgeous day outside weatherwise too. Sunny, bright, currently in the mid 70's, low humidity. Can't complain!
Worked on my basic layouts for the journal pages for the rest of 2007. Also moved the Price and related surnames over to the PriceAncestors.com website. No data yet, just the templates for the individual surnames. It's alot of work! Also linked all the surnames (56) to the new location. Adjusted a couple of animations for the webpages and researched each month to find out interesting things about them to add on each journal.
We made it to 93° today, so it was getting rather warm. Now at midnight it's still in the low 60's. We are supposed to stay hot for a couple of days, then storms on Wednesday and a cool down to upper 50's, low 60's for the rest of the week. Hurry up. I don't like 90's.
