Happy New Year's Eve !!!!!!
I'm happy to be able to update my journal today! We lost electricity for 6 hours today, apparently with the high winds there were some trees down locally. I'm really glad we got the power back this evening. It was starting to cool down a bit in the house (got down to 58°) and I'm a modern gal. I LIKE my electricity! I like modern conveniences! I don't like the thought of the "Good Ole' Days", like Dorothy says, "There wasn't anything good about them!" Well, the times were safer etc, but they were also very hard. I've heard my Dad talk about the days when he was growing up. No electricity, no running water or indoor bathrooms. That's enough right there to convince me. He said they kept a bucket of water in the kitchen at night and it would be frozen in the mornings. It really was rough, something my generation and my children's generations have never known or could possibly understand! It was survival and only survival. I know there were some who had it a little easier than that, but many didn't. Life was hard and I'm so thankful that I was born in a time where I didn't have to struggle to live. If you don't already know it, you should. That generation, my parents and grandparents generation were and are amazing people.
When we had Hurricane Isabel, back in 2003, we went for 11 days with no power. And for us, no power means also no running water or toilets that work and so on. I think that God allows us to lose power occasionally, so that we will appreciate the modern conveniences that we do have. We are definitely a spoiled generation!
NEW YEAR'S EVE: What a way to end the year. On Dec. 31st, Venus and the slender crescent Moon will gather together high in the southwestern sky for a beautiful conjunction visible for hours after sunset. The two brightest objects in the night sky can be seen through city lights and even fireworks--so everyone can enjoy the show. Meanwhile, closer to the horizon, Mercury and Jupiter are converging for their own Dec. 31st conjunction. This one is not so easy to see, but rewarding for those who make the effort to find the two planets shining through the rosy glow of sunset.
New Year's will be delayed again this year by one second. This old world is slowing down. Or is it global warming????
Well, we've come to the end of another year. I didn't get all my baking done, in fact, the only cookies I baked were the Molasses Crinkles. I intended on baking all the normal batches, but time just totally got away from me! I did use my "Tator Twister" which Seth bought me for Christmas many years ago and they teased me every year that I hadn't used it. It went into storage the year he gave it to me, by mistake, as we were in the process of packing up and shipping things to both my Dad's house and then to military storage for the duration of the move. Then we ended up not getting into our own home until 18 months later and a lot of stuff is STILL packed to this day in the basement. But I made a real effort this year to locate the instruction booklet and all the pieces and it does a GREAT job!!!!! Next time, I'm going to deep fry the potatoes with a batter. The book has several recipes in it! So COOL! Seth, I love it!!!!
I was going to bake up more cookies for the New Year's, but I'm fighting a mild head cold and want to stay away from sugar, so I'll leave my baking until next year. Sugar just SO makes my colds worse. I don't need more cookies anyway.
Have you made up your New Year's Resolutions? I do them every year. I wish I had saved them each year, but I didn't. I do have the last several years though. It's amazing how many things are repeated on each years' list. Of course, losing weight is up there in the top 5, as are many other things I want to accomplish. But this year, yep, this past year, I ACTUALLY did accomplish some items from last years list!!! I won't go into detail, but just know that I DID IT!!! Well, a few, not all of them. I would be perfect if I had done them all, you know.
I have assembled a complete year's worth of numbers for the accomplishments but don't know where to put them at this time. So will think about it for awhile and let you know where and when I post it. In the mean time, here is the monthly accomplishments for December. I'm off to watch the Big Apple's Ball so have a safe and Happy New Year!

Well, I've caught a mild head cold and I'm so glad it waited until now to hit me! I'm not down and out, just going to take it easy for a few days. I have a slight headache and mild sore throat, some head congestion as an added bonus. Just enough to know that I'm not quite right.
OK, stop laughing. I've admitted it, I'm not quite right. But I is what I is!
We did a little grocery shopping today, just to get some stuff to last through the weekend. I was hungry for fresh salad and fresh fruit, so basically that's what we bought! Also the usual stuff, milk, bread, and such. We had a good trip to town but I'm glad it's done. Now I can do some things around home that I've been wanting. Like catch up on more household projects (though we got several done before the holidays!). And other hobby items, like updating my genealogy programs and a little painting and drawing. Then there's sewing and quilting and some other things I'd like to get back to work on.
While JoAnna was here, we went downstairs and through some of my old tubs of stuff looking for some things that I wanted her to have. I found some unfinished potholders that I started when we lived up in Westminster, all cut out and ready to quilt. Also found the granny squares (crocheted) that need to be crocheted together to complete the afghan. I was great for starting these huge projects and once I learned how to do them, they got set aside. So one of my New Year's resolutions is to complete those old projects that I had started. I even found the 50, well actually 100 states that I had cut out for two state quilts. The states are pinned to the blocks to be sewn. Then I had planned on embroidering the state name, nickname, tree, flower, bird, motto and a license plate design and any other things I could think of to the 100 blocks. Big, BIG project! Well, it's on my list to do this year!
I'll talk more about my other New Year's resolutions later.

We ran to Virginia Beach with Seth, JoAnna and Joey today and they left to go across the Bridge-Tunnel and we came back home, arriving around 8:30 pm. We really had a wonderful time over the holidays with their visit! I already miss them!!!!

Nice day today, we had time to just sit and visit with the kids! They'll be hitting the road soon as they have several places yet to visit on their epic trip! But we're so glad they were able to visit with us for a week and to visit all the grandparents for the holidays! That meant alot to us as I'm sure it did also to the grandparents!!!!
It was fairly warm again today, getting up to 66°. Starting to feel like spring! Well, that is the next step in the yearly cycle right? With the exception of December 23rd's low of 14° here in Virginia, it's actually been colder in New Mexico where Seth lives than here!
I've decided that in addition to my monthly Accomplishments that I post on the last day of each monthly journal, I will add a "Year End Accomplishment Summary" which will be posted hopefully annually each January 1st starting with January 1, 2009. Yeah, it's just around the corner!

The cookies I made the other day are all gone, so by request I've made some more today. I'm staying out of them! They're good and I'll have a couple, but I'm not going to over-do this time! Course I did say I wasn't going to worry about food and diet during the holidays, didn't I? So, hey, maybe a handful will be ok.
We watched "The Santa Claus" with Joey this afternoon, but I fell asleep.... Today is a more quiet day. Seth & Jimmy got together for breakfast and later Seth & JoAnna were to meet up with some friends. Joey is playing with his cars and toys and I'm on the computer nearby. Jim is online also and I have made more cookies for the weekend. Time to kick back the feet and look at what Santa has brought us!

Merry Christmas !!!!!!
There was an earthquake today registering 6.2 in the MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES. And there was a 6.0 OFF THE COAST OF PAKISTAN today also.
Jim says my turkey dinner was very good. I made a couple of mistakes but seems like everyone survived. JoAnna was going to fix the gravy for me and I was going to do succatash. Well, my turkey got done an hour and a half sooner than I thought it would, so I panicked and started getting stuff in the over, before cooking the vegetables etc. I actually baked the rolls too early. But I wrapped them in a towel in a basket, cooked corn, since it is faster than succatash and used the canned gravy before I remembered that JoAnna had been going to fix the homemade gravy. But, well, we survived.... And dinner was good, the pumpkin pies turned out good also, which we ate a piece several hours later, since we were all "stuffed" right after the dinner!
What a wonderful time we had yesterday, good food and family and friends. No better way to spend the holidays! And Santa was good to us here at home too. We certainly have had a blessed year! We hope your Christmas is a good one. Keep safe, enjoy the time with family if you can and never forget the "Reason for the Season", the Baby Jesus.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!

There was an earthquake today registering 6.3 in the TONGA REGION.
Busy day, we visited Jim's parents and at their house many relatives came by also! It was so great to see everyone, some we haven't seen in many, many years!!!! I'm counting in my head right now but if I'm remembering correctly we had around 18 or so! Then we went to my brother, Kevin's house and again we had such a GREAT time! I believe there were about 12 of us there! So it sure was a great, fantastic, wonderful day for all of us! We got back home fairly late but the long drive was uneventful so tired but happy, we hurried off to bed so that Santa would come by the house! And he did.
I'll post some photos at a later date, but before the month is over!

It was icy early this morning but by 8 am things had thawed almost totally. Worked on housework and a few miscellaneous things around the house. I need to spend tomorrow baking cookies and such.
There was another earthquake today, this time measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN. Remember that I'm only mentioning the earthquakes above 6.0 in this journal. And the totals listed in each days heading are only earthquakes above the 2.5 level. So many shakes going on around the world, though it seems as if this month has had some lower totals. That can't be a good sign....

I did the grocery shopping today and have all the perishables at least, put away. Still have other stuff to put away, but it will take some time as I bought the stuff for baking my Christmas cookies and such today, so, well, I probably won't even put that stuff away since it's only a day or so before I start all my baking! It's getting close! Christmas is almost HERE! So much to do yet!!!!

Rainy day, already more rain than what was predicted. Think it's supposed to rain yet for another couple days! As long as it's not snow right now, guess we're ok. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE snow. But not when my family has to drive in it. So since family will be traveling to visit us this year, we can do without the snow until they are safe back at home! Then "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow", as the tune goes....

Well, it was supposed to cloud and and start to rain today and continue for the next 2-3 days. Bright sunny day and we got to 70° outside. Very pleasant day, almost hot.
Worked on laundry and the living room and when Jim got home, he brought the tree inside and got it set up. It's not decorated yet, we'll do that later, but I love the smell of pine in the house at Christmas. Only need the temperatures to get cold for it to be more Christmasy!

Happy Birthday Dad !!!!!!
So we have a little bit of wind today, it's cooler and things are drying out. The sun actually came out around 8 am this morning, so the rain and storms are past. So far the creek is staying below the run-over by about 12 inches. But all it takes is a break-up of debris further upstream. We're hoping it won't happen at this point....
When Jim came home from work this afternoon, the creek had gone down, so looks like our prayers were answered and the lane is fine!
December 11, 2008 - Thursday
Temperatures: Hi - 60° Lo - 40° Rainfall Amounts: 3.1"(inches)
Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):23
It started raining last night and we only had about a tenth of an inch (0.1") of rain when I went to bed (which counts on yesterdays totals!). We've now had over three inches. So, we're hoping the lane won't wash out. This is the time of year we have trouble when the leaves and twigs pile upstream and then get washed downstream to us and stop up the culvert. Going to be an interesting night I suspect.....
Really a nasty night out. Fortunately, it's not cold out!
There was an earthquake registering 6.0 on the Richter scale at MINAHASA, SULAWESI, INDONESIA. Nothing in the news media about it.

Today I worked on balancing the old checkbook and locating all my statements which hadn't been filed in quite some time. Also went through some more paperwork. Worked on the Christmas song again for abit. Need to learn how to lay those tracks, so will study on that the next few days to see if I can figure it out.
On my Just Kay Singing II webpage I've now uploaded 5 short clips of some songs that I sang in a couple different churches over the last few months also. Not the best clips but you get the idea anyway.

WOW! Can you BELIEVE that it is DECEMBER already????? How time flys! Today I did some grocery shopping and started working on another Christmas song. I recorded the keyboard part several times before I had a perfect one, well, not perfect, but less mistakes like wrong chords or like the one where I hit the tempo button instead of the ending button, and stuff like that. I'd make it all the way through to the last line or so and then make a mistake. That's becoming a nerve-wracking thing too, because I get nervous when I have it perfect and I'm down to the last line or two. Well, it happens. If you anticipate a mistake, you will make one. So I try to focus on the song instead of, "Oh wow, I'm almost to the end without a mistake" type thought! Oh, laugh it up. It's not easy to be perfect...
And this is just the keyboard. I still have 3-5 more tracks to lay, without any obvious mistakes... Think I'll make it? I'm actually working on it for a Christmas CD, but I'd like to have one copy where I pull out the lead and can use it for an accompaniment too. Interesting challenge!
When it's completed, I will post it on my website (after I sing it at a Christmas program). But until then, well, you'll just have to wait to hear it. Well, Dad & Dot will get a copy first anyway. I then still have several other songs to record. The Christmas CD will be shorter than most, so hopefully it won't take me too long to get 'er done!
Well, I'm really beat for today. Shopping just tires me out! And though it was predicted to be a nice day, it actually poured rain a couple times while I was shopping. The sun would come out for a brief time then dark clouds would appear and it would rain hard for about 5 minutes. The wind was blustery too, so it felt alot colder than it was. So I'm glad to be back home, warm, safe and sound!
