June 30, 2008 - Monday

Temperatures: Hi - 91° Lo - 71° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Today was once again just a routine Monday. Does that sound boring to you? Not to me... I remember the day when I worked full time or had bus schedules to meet, places to go and too many things to do. And how I do miss the days when the boys were young and all that, but I like having the day to myself these days, to do things around the house, not in a rush, but at my own speed. Granted, sometime my speed is a little bit TOO slow, but hey, there's always tomorrow. I'll make like Scarlet O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind".... "There's always tomorrow....Tomorrow's another day....I'll think about it tomorrow!" Whatever.

But don't kid yourself, if I could go back in time, I wouldn't hesitate. Provided I could go back with memory intact, so that I could avoid the mistakes and pitfalls that we've come through the last few years. And if it would spare any of us some pain, yep, I'd definitely relive the last 15-20 years to avoid those mistakes..... But then, if I changed the way things were in the past, would I have missed some of the good times we've had in the last 15-20 years??? That's the paradox, isn't it?

Don't I wax poetic marvelously????

However, life does move forward, not backward. So for the month of June, my meager accomplishments are listed below....

Temperatures: Hi - 94° Lo - 71° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Can you believe we are approaching the end of another month? Where DOES the time go???

I worked on my list of songs that I'm going to record for this 2nd CD. I'm hoping to begin next month. I'm also going to cut some old clips out of some old cassettes of "performances" I did with Dad and the trio over the years at various churches and make a CD of those. It should be interesting....

And of course, some cassettes will have to be re-ripped since I did lose a few of them (fortunately not many) when the computer died.

The pain in my back and side is easing more each day and I'm feeling better each day. That's a good thing.

Happy Birthday Dawn !!!!!

Happy Birthday Jessica Q !!!!!

Well, I finally went back and finished reconstructing the April 2008 Journal. It was still missing all the National whatever's of the Month thingys. So now that's completed.

And of course, I'm preparing the July Journal pages which take a little bit of work to design. So much to do, so little time... Well, not really...

Quiet day. Read some email and just took it easy today. Overdid it abit yesterday. I think it was the heat! I'm not a fan of hot weather, much prefer winter. Now I'm not talking about the blustery, bitter, windy cold type winter. I'm talking about the 25-35° dead calm, crisp, snow is in the air, woodsmoke smells outside and turkey baking in the oven type winters. Understand?

I always like to think about winter at this time of year. Helps me get through July and August!

Temperatures: Hi - 96° Lo - 68° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Hot, humid and hazy. Classic summer day. We had another high of 96° again today. I did some shopping in Fredericksburg but it was pretty rugged. I only made it to 4 stores and I was exhausted! So I called it a day and came back home. Between a little shopping and a little (and I mean LITTLE) housework, I'm pooped! That means tired for all you realists out there! I downloaded my email and really just didn't accomplish much more than supper and dishes!

And to make a boring, non-eventful journal entry even more so, I'm going to bed. 'Nite, y'all.

Temperatures: Hi - 96° Lo - 68° Rainfall Amounts: 0.1"(inches)

The doctor called back today and said the CT's were negative. Again, he is mystified at why I'm having the pain and nothing is showing up. They want me to have more stuff done, but I'm feeling better every day. I just believe that the crisis is over and unless the pain returns, well, leave well enough alone. You know the old "don't fix it if it ain't broken..." addage? Enough is enough is enough. I'm done. For now. I Believe! I have Faith! So nothing else is necessary for now.

Wow. The girl that did my IV was unbelievable! Honestly I didn't hardly even feel the needle prick in my arm when they started the IV. She was GOOD!!! The test was uneventful, actually didn't take too long either. Jim left work early to drive me there and back so I could drink all the Berry flavored liquid chalk that I had to drink at a certain time which meant I had to drink it on the drive into the tests. And as it turned out, the doctor ordered the wrong thing, I didn't need to drink all that "chalk". But they didn't want to reschedule CT for another day and send me home, so they ran the tests anyway.

Temperatures: Hi - 88° Lo - 59° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Doctor's appointment, this one was supposed to be my normal checkup. He informed me that the only thing they noticed on the ultrasounds was a slight swelling or bulge on the lower part of the kidney so they need to do a CT Scan to see what is going on. They want it right away, so it's scheduled for tomorrow morning. Ugh.

Did I tell you I hate needles?????

June 23, 2008 - Monday

Temperatures: Hi - 90° Lo - 63° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Laundry and ironing, typical Monday. Feeling a little better today. Still watching what I'm eating, and that is causing a little weight loss! Back-handed blessing, this pain of mine!

June 22, 2008 - Sunday

Temperatures: Hi - 89° Lo - 64° Rainfall Amounts: 0.2"(inches)

Still having some discomfort in my side and back but not intolerable. And as predicted there is a little bruising on my abdomen from the ultrasound. Otherwise, normal day, just did some things around the house and watched some TV.

June 21, 2008 - Sabbath

Temperatures: Hi - 89° Lo - 63° Rainfall Amounts: 0.6"(inches)

Hey Missy, where are you??? I neglected to get your email address and I know you wanted me to send you some photos of the family. If you read this, please email me!!!!

I still need to go through all my folders on my computer to locate the files that are corrupted and try to replace the ones I can. I also have several large folders of recovered data that are just numbered, no file names that I will have to look at and find the original folders that they belonged in. Big job, but do-able.

I cannot believe the article I just read from the Free-lance Star in Fredericksburg. This man, Frank Delano, wrote an article about how Obama has possible roots in King George and Westmoreland Counties here in Virginia. How Obama and James Madison are possibly 3rd cousins, nine times removed and Obama and General Robert E. Lee are possibly 5th cousins, eight times removed. Oh, pul-leaze! At the end of the article, he makes a comment about how Obama's father....well here's the exact quote,

"The village where Barack Obama Sr. was born is about 200 miles from Tanzania's Olduvai Gorge, where anthropologists have discovered fossil remains of human ancestors dating back 2.5 million years. Therefore, on his father's side, Obama might be a cousin to everybody on Earth."

Ya Think?

June 20, 2008 - Friday

Temperatures: Hi - 87° Lo - 57° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

I've added in all the High and Low temperatures for everyday this month in this daily journal. So you can scroll down and look at each date to see what our High's and Low's were and if there was rain, the amount we received. Just in case you are interested... Oh, and you may have to back up sometimes to the day before to check out the rainfall amounts. If I have posted this log before an evening thunderstorm, I'll correct the rainfall amounts accordingly.

Who says prayer doesn't work? During my doctor's visit earlier this week I was informed that I would probably require some major surgery immediately for me to get feeling better. He was 98% sure that it was imminent. I wasn't very happy but in enough pain that I would have to do it. He sent me for some ultrasound tests the next day and that combined with the tests he ran sounded pretty ominous.

So I'm happy to report that the doctor called today and doesn't understand it, but apparently the attacks I had were most likely medicine induced and by dropping a couple of them, the pain should cease. And I have ceased the meds and the nauseous feelings have gone away. The pain is still there but it isn't as bad as last week. So I'm very thankful and happy that surgery is not the next thing on my agenda!

We picked up some items at the store today and other than routine stuff, just came home and relaxed. Jim had a couple chores to do outside and me inside, so that accomplished we sat down for supper. I called over to talk with my brother who was visiting from Michigan. I wasn't up to making the trip over to visit and knew that even last weekend since I was feeling bad when I was there for the program we did at church. Hopefully, Ed & Linda will get back for a visit again later this year.

I think he was shocked to hear that I admired Hillary for her "stick-to-itness" during her campaign and would have voted for her. It doesn't mean that I agree with her because I don't on many issues. Like Health care for instance. Senator McCain is ok, and I respect what he has done for our country, but being a hero, which he definitely is, doesn't necessarily make him a good presidential candidate. Right at this moment, I don't agree with Hussein Obama on his issues, so, time will tell. I don't think my vote will matter anyway as Hussein Obama will win regardless. The news media, Hollywood and all the left-wing press are in love with him and the majority of American's that don't know how to think for themselves will vote blindly for him without looking at the issues or who is really more qualified. As far as me, I like the idea of some of the other countries having a concern about Senator McCain's shaky old hand hovering over the nuke button. (I saw that in an email and liked the concept.) Who will I vote for? I don't know. The jury is still out. I'll let you know when I see more debates and actual plans, not just "change we can believe in" with no changes listed.....(Nice logo, but talk is cheap...actions speak louder than words!) I will say that I definitely lean more to the right than the left so I find it hard to agree with many of the issues that Hussein Obama claims to support... Hussein Obama being of Muslim training, half white, half black (isn't it funny how the media labels him an African American?), color of skin makes no difference to me and I think it doesn't mean much to most people these days. It's not the color but the character that counts. Condeleeza Rice I would vote for anyday any way. I wish that Senator McCain would choose her as his running mate, better still, I wish SHE had run for president. She is a very intelligent woman and very dignified, educated, with good foreign relationship experience and I think she would make a wonderful president for our country. It wouldn't have mattered though to the media, they are the only ones who truly spout racism and bigotry. I also like Alan Keyes, and he has ties to Muslim too, but his values, well, he not only talks the talk, he walks the walk... The rest of Americans, at least 99% or more, take people for who they are....

June 19, 2008 - Thursday

Temperatures: Hi - 83° Lo - 56° Rainfall Amounts: 0.3"(inches) Thunderstorms

Routine day, housework, housework, a little TV. Played with some ants for awhile. We're in a battle with them over the hummingbird feeder. First there were the large black ants, then the large red ants. Then some medium size black ants and then more large black ants. Now it's both the large black ants and the mediums. We can't seem to locate the colonies. But we will.

At least they're staying outside this year!!! I usually have to spray around the doors and stuff to keep them from coming inside and usually only catch one or two before stopping them. But this year they are focused on the hummingbird feeder on the deck, so that's keeping them occupied. They are really fascinating to watch. But not for much longer!

Ultrasounds done yesterday. The girl tried to not hurt me, but it hurt anyway. I think I will get some bruising from it!

Happy Birthday Seth !!!!!

The story of the day you were born is on the June 2007 journal! What a day that was! The day you were born and the day your brother was born are the two happiest days of my life!!!!

I hope you have a really good day today!!! We love ya and are thinkin' of ya!!!!

June 17, 2008 - Tuesday

Temperatures: Hi - 82° Lo - 63° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Kinda rough night last night. Back and side was hurting and I was nauseaus most of the night. Must've ate something that disagreed. Even had some chills with the nausea, almost like the old "shock" of kidney stones except it doesn't quite feel like that so called the doctor for a visit. For those of you who have never had the "pleasure" of kidney stones, it first feels like you've been kicked by a horse in your back, under the shoulder blade, then someone sticks a knife in there and twists it around type of pain.

This pain is nowhere near that severe, thankfully. It's just there, dull, achy and pressure and varies according to what I eat apparently....

Watched a movie and took a nap this afternoon in front of the TV and otherwise a quiet day.

June 16, 2008 - Monday

Temperatures: Hi - 92° Lo - 63° Rainfall Amounts: 0.4"(inches)

All is well and quiet on the homefront. Just working on laundry and ironing and trying to catch up that dreadful housework that is always waiting for attention!

June 15, 2008 - Sunday

Temperatures: Hi - 89° Lo - 68° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

As Jim and I were driving back to Virginia yesterday, we noticed in the distance how the sky was getting darker. We knew the line of storms was coming but knew we were abit ahead of the curve. As we turned south on route 301 the dark skies followed in our rearview mirrors. At one stop light, even though the storm was well behind us, a "bolt out of the blue" struck just across the parking lot from us and it really "banged" hard and loud! It was SO COOL!!!!

The storms followed us all the way to Virginia, though we drove mostly in the sunshine. As we unloaded the vehicles, we could hear the thunder coming and not 10 minutes after we were inside the house, the storms went through. They weren't bad ones, just summer-garden-variety-type, you know, a little thunder, a little wind, a little lightning and a little rain. Nothing like the stuff we had a couple weeks ago!

Don't know why my back and side are hurting so bad. It's still a tolerable thing but it is at times uncomfortable.

June 14, 2008 - Sabbath

Temperatures: Hi - 96° Lo - 68° Rainfall Amounts: 0.5"(inches) Thunderstorms

Jim came over early (was coming to visit his parents anyway) so he left a few hours earlier and had burned me a new thumb drive and CD for the program. My Hero!!!! And they worked beautifully!!! I think the program was a success. We had over 85 people there and several others participated which is always so nice!!!! I did about 15 songs, some on piano with Dad on the guitar and others with the accompaniment CD's, plus 4 powerpoints (a couple with words to the songs so the congregation could join in, one of just pretty scenery to go with one of my songs, and one was a tribute to Dottie Rambo). Then we had a delicious pot luck dinner and some good visiting time before ending the afternoon. I understand that some continued on in the afternoon but I had to head back to Virginia.

I wanted to thank Rock Hall & Chestertown Churches, for being there, for having us. What an honor to be able to do this once again this year!!! Thanks to all of you for a great day, one I'll never forget! We also got a large group photo of most of the folks there which will most likely be published in the church magazine. At least it was sent forward to show that even though the upper people of the "Conference" may feel that "Campmeeting" is not "alive" on the Eastern Shore, we are proof that it is ALIVE and WELL!!!!!

Thanks again, Rock Hall & Chestertown Churches and to all those who attended, those who participated in the program, both up front and behind the scenes!!! Every single one of you helped make this program a GREAT success!!!!

June 13, 2008 - Friday

Temperatures: Hi - 94° Lo - 65° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

I'm writing the next couple days via "hind-sight" since I was not at home to update my journals. What a busy couple of days.

I traveled over to Dad's today and also visited with Jim's parents for a few minutes. Dad & I have the program tomorrow at the church and we went to set up equipment and test the sound system. I messed up, I burned CD's and a thumb drive (memory stick) and figured by doing both of them if one had a problem we would still be ok. WRONG. Dumb me, with the changes in my system, I apparently didn't burn the powerpoints correctly. I did ok on the cda files but oh well. We'll manage.

Happy Anniversary Dad & Dot!!!!!

Hope you had a great anniversary today! Will see ya soon.

June 11, 2008 - Wednesday

Temperatures: Hi - 91° Lo - 68° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Busy day, working on catching up some housework and laundry. Stuff piled up on me last week with no power!

Don't know why, guess the devil is trying to keep this program from happening, but my back and side started hurting this week. It's quite sore but tolerable for the most part.

June 10, 2008 - Tuesday

Temperatures: Hi - 101° Lo - 73° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

I got out of the driveway ok yesterday morning with only one time hitting my bumper as I misjudged one deep hole. I tried to go around it and it was a spot that the creek had washed away part of the driveway. I couldn't get over far enough because of fear of putting the car on it's frame in the gulleys that washed down the lane. So I went just in the edge of the hole and it was enough that it almost stopped my forward momentum. I'm sure I hit the bumper slightly but gravity kept me rolling. The rear of the car wanted to join the front of my car on the one spot where I went up the embankment slightly, but bottom line is that I made it out.

I was concerned about the return trip and timed it so I would be home before dark. Actually, I had less trouble coming back up the lane than when I went down it early in the morning. So that was a good thing.

I took some pictures at the funeral and perhaps later I'll post some online. Not yet, it's too soon for me to look at them. My aunt had a couple of Mom's paintings and my cousins gave them to me after the funeral. What can I say? Noone will ever know how much that meant to me!!!!!! All I can do, still, is cry about it. Joanna & Lou Ann, just so you will know, that I think that was the most beautiful thing you did, the most wonderful thing for me. I'll not only think of Mom & Mom-Mom Thomas but of Aunt Clara and you two, each time I look at these paintings!!!! Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!!!!

Temperatures: Hi - 100° Lo - 74° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Happy Birthday Ed!!!!!

I'm happy for my brother having a another birthday but today is a really sad day. It's Aunt Clara's funeral today and that's going to be really hard.

June 8, 2008 - Sunday

Temperatures: Hi - 97° Lo - 68° Rainfall Amounts: 0.5"(inches) Thunderstorms

Happy Birthday LP!!!!!

Busy day today, I'm concerned about getting out of the driveway in my car. I think getting out will be OK. Scary, but ok. It will be trying to get back in that will be the worst. I know I'll worry about it regardless.

June 7, 2008 - Sabbath

Temperatures: Hi - 100° Lo - 70° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Stormed again most of the night off and on. Kept us awake. Had alot on my mind anyway so just couldn't rest well.

I've been overwhelmed with memories of Aunt Clara from when I was a child and the times we went places together, her and Mom and Lou Ann and me and Terry. Sometimes Mom-Mom Thomas was with us too. We had an old 1956 Buick that all of us would pile into, Mom would drive into Chestertown and pickup Aunt Clara and Lou Ann, we would already have Mom-Mom and Terry and off we would go to Dover to a place called Rodney Village. I think it's still there, but at the time it was a little shopping area, not a mall like today. There was a Foxes 5 and 10 store where we would sit down and have chicken salad sandwiches (at least that's what I always had) with potato chips and pickles and a coke for lunch. Usually we were buying school supplies, not necessarily clothes, as we made a trip up to Wilmington each fall to Robert Hall's for clothes. But Rodney Village was always such a treat!

We would sing in the car and Lou Ann would bounce. When I say bounce I mean rock forward and backwards, bouncing against the back seat the whole trip. Those were the days!

After Mom had died and I was living in Takoma Park Md, (and I had my first car - the old 1966 Mustang), I would drive down to Virginia where Aunt Clara was living then and spend a weekend with them on occasion.

A very special lady whom I will miss dearly even though I didn't get to see her very often! It hurts to let her go.

June 6, 2008 - Friday

Temperatures: Hi - 84° Lo - 67° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Well, here we go again. We just got power back this morning. 37 ½ hours with no power, no water etc. We couldn't start the generator until morning due to all the rain, so some items in frig & freezer are forfeit. Power went out on Wednesday evening during round one of the storms. We had 3 lines of storms pass through our area. Others had 4 lines. We had hail, we had a little wind, we had heavy rain, 3.3" to be exact. We have trees down (not because of wind but ground saturation), we have huge gulleys in the lane, both ours and the common drive, we have about 10-15' of driveway almost completely gone. Not as bad as a couple years ago, when we lost 25' of driveway, but bad enough that my car won't go through it.

Temperatures and humidity on the rise, supposed to hit upper 90's for the next 10 days or foreseeable future. Possibly hit over 100° on a couple of days. If we break the century mark, it will be the first time since records were kept in Virginia (~100 years) that temps hit the 100° mark in the first 11 days of June.

Can't find any damage to the tree that got struck by lightning. Jim says with all the rain we've had, that's not unusual, especially if it wasn't a big bolt of lightning. It was awesome. I didn't even scream. Or grab my ears. It just happened too fast.

I sure love having electricity back. I'm a modern-age woman. I love electricity. I love AC. I love having water. I love having cold food in the frig. I love having TV and fans and lights and oh, just love having electricity.

June 5, 2008 - Thursday

Temperatures: Hi - 91° Lo - 66° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)

Well, I'm writing this a couple days later. Line one of the storms did indeed go north of us, but line two sent a small intense little storm zooming our way and we lost power. Line 3 brought us more rain and some twirling in the sky as it approached. Jimmy came to check on us and couldn't get up our lane. He ran from the common drive as the storm came up fast. Between that storm and the next one, he ran, in the dark, through a knee deep creek across our lane, back to the common drive to head home. We had hail in both the first storms and the last storms, but nothing significant, small pea sized hail that was just mixed a little with the heavy rain.

I was looking out the front window just before we lost power yesterday evening when lightning struck the large tree right at the top of the driveway. I saw the bolt go to the ground and large sparks flew clear across the driveway!!!! WOW. That was a shocker.

My dad called to let me know that my Aunt Clara Liers passed away yesterday. She was my mom's older sister and they had been very close. I'm really sad to hear of her passing.

June 4, 2008 - Wednesday

Temperatures: Hi - 91° Lo - 65° Rainfall Amounts: 3.3"(inches) Thunderstorms, strong lightning, trees down.

Storms coming, nasty lines, moving 60-70 mph coming across from Indiana. Looks like they are going to go just north of our area. Called the families to warn them stuff is moving fast and has the classic "bow echoes" which indicate high winds and possibly even tornadic situations.

Oh, we're now under the gun for a line of storms and lightning is coming fast. Shutting down!

Temperatures: Hi - 80° Lo - 57° Rainfall Amounts: 2.0"(inches) Thunderstorms

Did a little grocery shopping today, we got power back and I wanted to restock a few items. Even though we ran the generator, we didn't start it for the first 6 hours or so, meaning that some items won't keep.

June 2, 2008 - Monday

Temperatures: Hi - 82° Lo - 55° Rainfall Amounts: 0.8"(inches) Thunderstorms, pea-sized hail, branches down.

In case you didn't realize it, I wrote up yesterday's journal today! Since we didn't have power yesterday evening!!! 10 hours, no power. Typical.

I've started something new, similar again to something Seth has been doing on his daily journals, keeping a log of the temps and weather. I've always kept rainfall amounts on my calendars, but have never organized them. So I'm doing it for now just on paper. I will figure out later how to put it on my web pages. I can't decide whether to set up a separate page just for these logs or whether to just include them daily...... Seth does his daily which is really the best way, but I'm bad about logging stuff everyday, so I've got to think about it for a few days. You'll be the FIRST to know when I decide how to add the data.

Today was a beautiful, after the storms typical day. Lower humidity, bright blue skies and sunshine. I think storms are coming back later this week however.

June 1, 2008 - Sunday

Temperatures: Hi - 96° Lo - 55° Rainfall Amounts: 1.5"(inches) Thunderstorms

Beginning of the 2008 Hurricane Season

Anniversary of Earthquake at Plymouth Plantation - June 1, 1638

The average person may not associate earthquakes with the eastern portion of the United States, yet some of the largest seismic events have occurred east of the Rocky Mountains. In fact, the recorded history of earthquakes in the New World began shortly after the Pilgrims landed, when in 1638, a damaging earthquake rocked Plymouth Colony.

A recently released report by one of New England's foremost seismologists has shed some light on the possible epicenter and magnitude of the 1638 earthquake. He found that the French colonists on the St. Lawrence River and the English along the Massachusetts coast felt this quake with equal intensity. In order for this to happen he believes the most likely epicenter would be central New Hampshire with a magnitude of 6.5 to 7.

June started with a BANG at our house. We had a storm come up quite quickly, which gave us small pea-sized hail for about 20 seconds or so, as well as another 8/10th inch of rain. We also had thumb size branches to arm size (dead) limbs littered all over the yard, deck and driveway. About six hours later we lost power (according to the power company trees were still falling). Power stayed out about 20 minutes then came back on. About an hour later, we lost power again, this time for 10 hours. Not so bad, as it wasn't supposed to be back on until Tuesday, but the wonderful "crews" got us back online in 10 hours!!!! Hallelujah!!! I always get memories of Isabel back in 2003 when we lose power for more than a couple hours. (for those of you who aren't familiar with Isabel, we lost power for 11 days! as well as alot of trees down and etc!!!!). So 10 hours isn't so bad!

And did you hear? Even though today is the official start of the 2008 Hurricane season, we've already had our first Tropical Storm Arthur. Began on the 31st of May and is currently inland, I think, Belize and essentially is just a rain storm now, considered dissapated. OK, we may be on the start of an active season, I'll have to check out the predictions! We've already had a record breaking year on tornadoes in the U.S.

I've started keeping records of the High & Low temperatures daily as well as the rainfall amounts. I'm not sure how to incorporate this into the journal, but will figure it out before the end of the month. Someday, on my "big Want list", I'll have it all computerized and automized or whatever. But for now it's just me checking the rain gauge and thermometer several times a day!

This is going to be a very busy month. We have Father's Day, 5 birthdays, one anniversary, two weddings and a church program that I know of, going on this month. Yep. Busy month! Cool!!!

As usual, if you didn't see the end of my journal entries for May, please check out the archive pages, link above, to see all the accomplishments (that's a joke!) for last month.
