No eruption of Mt. Redoubt in Alaska yet, though the scientists feel it is imminent. Seismic activity is still increasing and an observation flight by scientists yesterday afternoon reported no sign of ash emission yet, but discovered significant steaming from a new melt depression at the mouth of the summit crater. This is the type of volcano that is explosive in nature apparently versus the type in Hawaii that spout out lava on a regular basis. I'm not a volcanologist, so what do I know? The other piece of information that you should know is that almost half of Alaska's population lives within a couple hundred mile radius of Mt. Redoubt. One of the reports says that since the volcano is located about 35 miles from the inlet, chances of a debris field reaching the water is low, hence the danger of tsunami's from a debris field into the water is also low. Other factors can contribute to tsunami's however, so this risk should probably still be considered. Again, I'm just a hobbyist with interests in disaster type scenarios, so what do I know?

Here's the official report at midnight Eastern Standard Time:

Observers from the gas/observation flight today report continued melting at the summit area. Holes in the ice continue to grow exposing more steaming rock. Volcanic gases continue to be detected. Web camera views are currently dark. The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Volcano Alert Level remains at WATCH.

The other thing is that when Mt. Redoubt erupts, it will possibly lower the temps globally slightly for a couple years, as it did before in 1989 - 1990 and as Mt. Helens did back in the early 80's. Could be a couple colder winters, snowy and less tornadoes and hurricanes for a couple years, huh? We'll watch and let you know.

I remember Mt. St. Helens eruption and all the publicity before and after she blew. I was working for the Bird Banding Lab, a division of the Department of the Interior at the time and we had a couple guest speakers from the National Geographic Society who had been there right after the eruption. I was so fascinated about it all (my first volcano!) that I mentioned to my boss about my sand collection and how it would be so cool to add some "ash" to my collection. Well, long story short, my boss called them and then sent me downtown with some paperwork for NGC. I found the office and visited with them while we ate lunch in their office and they showed me more photos and ash and rocks from various volcanoes and then gave me a small jar of ash from Mt. St. Helens for my collection. I was SO thrilled!!!! (Think maybe my boss pulled some strings on this one which was so very nice of him!) And I was very pregnant with Seth on this adventure too. So, naturally, I've always been fascinated with volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunami's and such. Now you know from where Seth gets his interest in tornadoes! I have collected so many statistics about the various disasters, too, enough that it would be difficult for me to ever get them all organized to put on my webpages. But I will try! And now you know from where Jimmy gets his interest in statistics!

Well, can you believe it? Here we are at the end of January already! Where does the time go? How many of the New Year's Resolutions have you kept? How many have you broken already? I've actually kept quite a few of mine, so far and I won't tell you how many I've broken yet.

I've set up next month's journal page, be sure to check it out! I have a couple of old photos of the boys playing in the snow at Westminster, MD. Both are night photos, when it was announced that schools would be closed the next day because of the impending snowstorms. That meant they could stay up later and play, as well as have some fun in the snow! And since their homework was already done, man, that was the best!!!! Also the background of the page is of a photo of Seth as a baby with his first good snowstorm when we still lived in Laurel, MD. So check it out tomorrow, the 1st of February!

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):17

Routine Friday, housework, laundry, vacuuming and of course, more work on filing and paperwork as well as these webpages! What can I say? I'm a creature of habit. I like a routine. It may seem mundane to the rest of you, but for me, there is a sense of satisfaction on just doing what I do, when I do it and how I do it! Not boring to me.

And the latest on Mt. Redoubt in Alaska: Status Report

Unrest at Redoubt Volcano continues, though no eruption has yet occurred. Seismicity levels have increased since yesterday evening and have also risen markedly over the last hour. Pilot reports, clear AVO webcam views, and satellite and radar views confirm that Redoubt Volcano has not yet erupted at the time of this report. Redoubt remains at Aviation Color Code ORANGE and Volcano Alert Level WATCH.

Bright, sunny day and though the temperatures are abit warmer, the wind makes it feel about the same! The snow is frozen solid on my back deck, even though the temps are well above freezing. We don't get any sunshine in the winter on the back of the house! And though it will be warmer most of today and into tomorrow, I believe it will get colder again by Sabbath. Interesting weather.

Have you heard about Mt. Redoubt up in Alaska? They're expecting her to "blow" in the next two weeks! An active volcanoe which last erupted in 1989. Some of you may remember the story about the jetliner that got ash sucked into the engines and fell over 10,000 feet! Most have been a horrifying experience! Anchorage is about 100 miles from the volcanoe and they are preparing for the worst. Expecting layers of ash if it is a moderate eruption, at the very least. I'll research it and post more about it in the next few days!

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):30

Cold and icy this morning but warmed up to above freezing during the mid-day. We got some good rain, which washed away 90% of the snow, but the yard still has a good coating of snow/ice/slush! Still pretty, even with all the animal tracks through it!

Worked on paperwork once again today. I had a ton of it to do, and will still be working on it for another month. But each day I'm making a little progress! That, plus a little housework and I'm calling it a day.

January 27, 2009 - Tuesday

Temperatures: Hi - 34° Lo - 29° Snowfall Amounts: 2.0"(inches) + ¼" (inch) of ice so far!
Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):18

Yea! Finally some of the white stuff!!! And it's so pretty coming down I took some photos which I will post at a later date!

Well, we got perhaps a bit over 2 inches of snow, then it started to rain. However, the worst case scenario, temps are below freezing. So we have about a ¼" of ice as I'm typing this. Icicles are hanging from everything and we've lost internet which means the satellite dish is iced over. Hopefully we won't lose power, but unless temps rise above freezing, it could be dicey tonight! Salt, the one kitten was making snowballs and really playing in the snow! I've never seen a cat play in the snow like that before! She was smacking the snow, bunching it up then rolling it and pouncing on it. Silly cat! She also likes to watch TV. She will get on our deck and sit and watch thru the window. Amazing. Never seen a cat do that before either. Silly, silly cat.

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):36

Worked on my room today, tons of paperwork to still be sorted, tossed or filed. Takes alot of time to go thru stuff. I'm tossing old receipts and such that are over 5 years old unless they are important. I tend to keep all grocery receipts and stuff and it's not necessary to hold them this long. So that's the kind of "paperwork" I'm trying to get rid of these days!

Also have a ton of genealogy emails that need to be filed. I do keep those, mostly on the computer but some are pertinent to my family surnames, so those are printed out also to go in the individual folders. Very tedious and time consuming, but I'm nothing if not simply a "pack-rat"!!!

So today was just general housework and paperwork. Tomorrow should be more of the same. I'm enjoying it, how 'bout you?

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):24

The news media talked about a 6.1 earthquake in Southern Alaska. It was apparently downgraded to a 5.7 according to the USGS and is NOT listed in RED as all the earthquakes above 6.0 are, all around the world.

CURIOUS ASTEROID FLYBY: Newly-discovered asteroid 2009 BD is slowly passing by Earth today only 400,000 miles away. The approximately 10 meter-wide space rock poses no significant threat, but it merits attention anyway: The orbit of 2009 BD appears to be almost identical to the orbit of Earth. 2009 BD may be a rare "co-orbital asteroid," circling the sun in near-tandem with our planet. If current measurements of the asteroid's orbit are correct, 2009 BD will remain in Earth's neighborhood for many months and possibly years to come. Visit http://spaceweather.com to view the asteroid's curious orbit.

So here's the official forecast for our house!

Overnight: A slight chance of flurries. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Calm wind.

Monday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Light east wind.

Monday Night: A chance of snow after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. North wind between 3 and 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday: Snow likely before 1pm, then snow, freezing rain, and sleet. High near 32. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet, becoming all freezing rain after 1am. Low around 29. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: A chance of snow before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

If this keeps up, we might actually get an inch of something..........

Otherwise a quiet day, nothing much going on. We are still recuperating from the flu from a week ago so we've found we are very tired. I actually fell asleep on the sofa trying to watch TV and while that's not necessarily unusual, it actually has been unusual for me to do so lately. But fortunately, no schedules to keep today, so we just enjoyed the peace and quiet!

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):35

I was tired today and had a splitting headache. It finally eased after lunch and I took an afternoon nap too. Now I'm feeling alot better! Weird, huh?

This evening I worked some more on the Kay Urie webpages and now have the updates completed on these pages. Next week I'll start on the N4KUP pages. Those are also quite tedious because there are so many of them, you know, all those hurricane pages etc. But I'm encouraged with my progress, so will continue to press forward!

Hm-m-m-m, a little white stuff possibly in our future this week? We shall see!

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):18

A little more housework, a quick trip to the grocery store, trash to the dump and other various little errands today. Otherwise, a quiet Friday! Feels so much warmer today, almost like spring, after all the cold we've had the last couple of weeks.

January 22, 2009 - Thursday

Temperatures: Hi - 46° Lo - 15° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)
Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):30

Today was housework, housework. I vacuumed and ran a couple loads of laundry, ironed 9 shirts, cleaned up the kitchen, etc, etc, etc. Always a pain to do housework, not my favorite thing in life, but there is a sense of satisfaction when the job is "done". I put quotes around the word "done" as in it is NEVER "done" but all that I'm going to DO today.

Spent another couple hours today working on these webpages. Today I completed all the "school" section pages. Over the weekend I'll work on the "scrapbooking" pages! Once I get working on them, it goes pretty quickly. One could even call it boring, but I wouldn't. Just tons of little things that have needed to be fixed for several years! Now all my email links will work again. Hopefully, all the little jpg's and gif's will also work! And there are many things that are invisible to you, the public, that needed to be fixed, errors in my html etc. So, you may not notice much other than the counters have been reset, but just know there was a "ton" of fixes involved behind the scenes that I'm thrilled to have accomplished!

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale NEW BRITAIN REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA and a 6.1 in KEPULAUAN BARAT DAYA, INDONESIA.

It's encouraging that I am actually getting alot done these days. I'm almost done with the updates to the kayurie webpages! That is amazing, considering how many I had to do. Course this puts me at about the halfway mark on the total project. But I'm getting there!

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale SOUTHEAST OF THE LOYALTY ISLANDS.

Inaugaration Day !!!!

Interesting day. Yes, I watched it all. Very cool seeing several presidents at once. 39th, Jimmy Carter and his wife; 41st George Bush and Barbara Bush; 42nd, Bill Clinton and Senatory Hillary Clinton; 43rd, George Bush and Laura Bush. Kind of unusual to see so many at one ceremony but people live longer these days and it was good to see so many distinguished former Presidents able to attend the Inauguration.

Happy Birthday David !!!!

Martin Luther King Day !!!!

Here I made a New Year's Resolution to be better about sending out birthday cards etc., to all the nieces & nephews, and what do I do but miss the very first one of the year! I do have an excuse as I was very sick all week, so never left the house until Sunday, but still. Anyway, Happy Birthday David and I hope you had a GREAT day!!!!

The Commonwealth of Virginia has changed and moved "Lee-Jackson-King Day" to the Friday before Martin Luther King Day. And, so now, we have our "Lee-Jackson Day" as a state holiday and the Martin Luther King Day is a Federal holiday.

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.5 on the Richter Scale SOUTHEAST OF THE LOYALTY ISLANDS.

Feeling better everyday. Went to my painting class today. I wasn't sure I would be able to go this morning, but decided to try and if I got feeling bad, well, I'd just have to leave early. Fortunately, I did good and stayed through the whole class. I feel like I learn things each time I go and I hate to miss one! So you can see my newest painting on my Art Class webpage.

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale at KERMADEC ISLANDS, NEW ZEALAND.

Now the big question. Will we get any snow? My guess is no. Oh, we might see a flurry, maybe even a light dusting, but no real snow. I'm not a weatherman, meteorologist or any such thing. Just an old gal who's lived around for awhile. No snow. But we can ALWAYS dream.....

January 17, 2009 - Sabbath

Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):38

Yes, that's 3° Farenheit. I think that's the coldest we've seen since we've lived in Virginia. I have to admit that it's even a little too cold for me. Perhaps I'm just sensitive to it since I've been so sick all week. Regardless, our previous low in VA since we lived here (1995 to now) was 6°. However, in Westminster our all time low was -14°. Yes, I said "MINUS". So 3° is somewhat warmer. I think I still prefer the 30's - 40's as my favorite.

Still not up to par. What can I say?

January 16, 2009 - Friday

Temperatures: Hi - 27° Lo - Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)
Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):40

Well, today is the first day I've felt up to booting up the computer since last Tuesday. I was fine up through Tuesday then that stupid flu bug hit me too. It's one of the worst flu's that I've ever had. I'm runnning about 2 days behind Jim who has been very sick also. But he's doing somewhat better today and I'm at least up.

Of course, I've backfilled my journals for Tuesday through Thursday, since I felt too lousy to do anything on those days, and too lousy to do much else today. And of course as you can see we had a couple good sized earthquakes on those days.

And how about that plane landing in the Hudson River yesterday? That pilot and co-pilot were definitely heroes, absolutely. But I believe they had some angels under those wings keeping them level as they landed on the water. If the wings had been just inches off, the outcome would've certainly have been tragic. I'll bet you that the 155 people on board that plane believe in God today, even if they didn't yesterday!!!!

Well, still not up to par, so will call it a night. Need rest. Lots of rest.

I'm sick. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..............

(Backfilling data).... An earthquake of 6.0 on the Richter Scale occurred today in the MID-INDIAN RIDGE.

Today is the 6th anniversary of Jimmy's accident, which totaled both his car and the other car involved. I will not forget that phone call and the sick feeling of panic you get. The other girl had bruises and minor scraps. Jimmy had a vertical crack in his breast bone. Painful, but nothing they could really do for it, other than a few weeks of rest and no heavy lifting etc. Angels working overtime that day, for sure!!!!

He pulled across route 301 in front of another vehicle headed southbound. He didn't see her and she didn't see him, so the impact literally tore the front of Jimmy's car off. We're so thankful that he was not seriously injured!!! God is good!!!

Temperatures: Hi - 43° Lo - 29° Rainfall Amounts: 0.0"(inches)
Daily Worldwide Earthquakes (greater than 2.5 on the Richter Scale):10

Pretty typical Monday, at least around my schedule. Jim has the flu and has been quite sick since last night and my oldest brother in California is having some surgery today. So currently waiting to hear about my brother's surgery.

Otherwise, it's laundry and ironing and that sort of stuff around the house. I'll hope to work on my webpages abit later today. The weather predictions for Thursday night, low of 16°, Friday, high near 28° and low that night of 13°, now that's cold! It would be tolerable if there is no wind. But many times when temperatures come in like that, there is a North or Northwest wind that makes it feel like it's biting you. However, since that is a few days out, I'm sure they will modify it before then. So I'm not concerned about it.

You can understand why, way back in the 1600's thru the 1800's, people, like the Native Americans, American Indians or whatever name they use now, were nomadic, at least many of the tribes were. They would follow the buffalo and game of which wandered southward during the cold winter nights and northward during the summer. And, noone should get all PC with me on this one, since I have Native Americans in my ancestry background, so I'm not trying to offend anyone. Forgive my ignorance of the proper names for the "original Americans".

My father called to let me know that my brother was out of surgery and all went well. My sister-in-law emailed this evening that all is well but they will keep him over night just for monitoring purposes. So we're very thankful once again that all is well.

Jim is still very sick, so hoping he will feel a little better tomorrow. It's been a pretty rough couple days with him being so sick. Calling it a night for now, I'm exhausted.

Overcast day again, but temps staying well above freezing so far. Worked on my webpages and actually finished the Blue Crab Hobbies pages are completed and uploaded. I still need to add the stuff that's for sale on most pages but otherwise they are corrected and done. The only thing you will notice is that the counters have all been reset to 0 and the "contact me" link at the bottom of the page now works. Other than that, you probably won't notice any changes. But trust me, they are there!

Now I've started on the KayUrie webpages and still have quite a few to go there. I'm sure it will take me a couple weeks to make all the corrections. Well, maybe not that long, since I'm not going to redo all the news journal pages. I'll just start with the 2009 pages and for all future ones, the corrections will be there. Well, I will have to correct some stuff on each page but not the complete "overhaul" that I will do on all the rest of them.

Quiet day that started out sunny but by mid-afternoon had clouded up and started to rain. Fortunately, the temperatures remained around 40°, (so far), so nothing freezing happening outside for now.

Watched a Gaither DVD that I got for Christmas! It was really good! There is no music but the good ole Southern Gospel, Country Gospel and Bluegrass Gospel. At least in my book.

Made a quick run to the grocery store today and realized that I'm still playing Christmas music in my car. It was such a nice holiday, guess I just don't want to let it go yet. Yes, my tree is still up, though it will come down this weekend most likely. I normally would have it down, guess I said all this yesterday, but, well, it will come down soon. (says the person who once left her tree up until the middle of February. Yes, it's a live tree.).

Well, I'm sure it's not alive anymore. But you understand what I meant.

Well, I'm tired for tonight so I won't keep typing just to hear myself type....

The biggest full Moon of 2009 is coming this weekend. It's a 'perigee Moon' as much as 30% brighter than lesser Moons we'll see in the months ahead. Get ready for moonlight! Unfortunatly, for us located in the Mid-Atlantic area, we probably won't get to see it. The weather predictions are for rain moving in early Sabbath morning and continuing throughout the day, mixing with some snow late Saturday night before ending. It may be possible to see it a little on Sunday night, but I won't hold my breath.

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale in COSTA RICA. I haven't heard anything on the news about it. According to the details on the Earthquake website, it was centered 20 miles NNW of SAN JOSE, Costa Rica.

Well, I've about finished the pages on the Blue Crab Hobbies website. Just another hour or so of work and then to upload, and I will have the first batch of webpage fixes done. That's the good news. The bad news is that it was one of the smallest websites that needed to be done. Good news is, I worked out additional bugs and things that I found while working on those pages, so the rest should be a little easier. Bad news is, the pages here at Kay Urie website will be some of the hardest to correct and the largest website to correct with over 450 actual pages to do. Well, I didn't say it would happen overnite. It will be an ongoing project for most of the year! Actually, if I get it done in 6 months, it would be quite an achievement!

For today I started with some basic housework, bathrooms, garbage, and of course, laundry! I've always got tons of that to do anyway. I also need to "un" decorate from Christmas. Maybe this weekend. I always hate for the season to end. Normally I put the Christmas stuff away the first week Jim goes back to work, after the New Year's. But had other obligations this week, doctor's appointment and such, so it will be this weekend or next week. We didn't get chance to do alot of decorating this year, just ran out of time, so there really isn't a lot to do. I just need to do it.

It rained pretty hard during the night or early morning hours. We have an inch so far. We are very lucky that it wasn't freezing rain! I suspect that areas north of us may have had a mess on their hands this morning, but haven't watched the news yet to see.

The work I'm doing on my webpages, though very involved and tedious, will hardly be noticed by you, the reader. Most of the fixes I'm doing are strictly to the html coding and java script corrections that needed to be done. You may notice that when I'm done, all my email links (the ones to me from the various pages) should now work. Many haven't been working for years! All of the counters are being reset to zero (0000) as I'm assigning new numbers etc. I had only planned for about 999 pages originally and believe it or not, I currently have 1012 pages and adding more, especially needed for the Genealogy pages located at Urie Family and Price Ancestors websites. So I needed to add another digit place in the counters, hence all the renumbering and shuffling. I have actually found some that I had used the same number twice. This problem occurred after my big computer crash last March. I had a word document that I used for whenever I added a new webpage, I had this list of used numbers. That document was one of the 25% that was not recovered and so I had been "guessing" at my number assignments. So now I have started a document that goes to 9999 instead of 999, enabling me to add many more pages if necessary. Hm-m-m-m-m, I wonder if I should've gone on to the 5 digit numbering, 99,999???? Well, too late for this major overhaul. But who knows what the future holds? First I'll try to complete the ones I have.

I know, I know, I haven't completed all the ones I've promised yet and that is also something I will remedy as I'm fixing the pages. I've started with one of the smallest sets at Blue Crab Hobbies. I haven't uploaded them yet, but will post here in the daily journal as I upload various pages. The reason I started with the Blue Crab Hobbies pages is they are going to be constantly changing and thought I'd get those started and add to them as I get my items lined up for sale. I should have those done in the next couple of days and then I'll upload them and move on to the next set.

Are you bored yet? I get on a subject or a project that I'm excited about and that's all I want to talk about. Sorry. The alternative is housework. And we all know how much I LOVE that subject.

Doctor's appointment today, just a routine 3 month checkup. All seems well. Otherwise it was a dreary, cold rainy day with temps hovering just above freezing. This evening the temps are falling a bit but King George County is not in the Winter Watch area, north and west of us are. However, I see small beginning ice cycles trying to form on the deck so we shall see. I do believe that the continual flow of rain from the Gulf will warm us enough that it won't be a problem. But it might be a little bit, in the early morning hours north of here.

Besides all the aftershocks there was another earthquake or aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale today NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF PAPUA, INDONESIA. They are really getting pounded!

It was a dreary Monday, actually a little cold rain briefly. Weather will deteriate more this evening. Talking about some freezing rain maybe early tomorrow, probably north of us. I don't think we're in the Winter Storm Watch area, though counties nearby are.

Besides housework, I started the monumental task of fixing all my webpages. The first one was the most difficult because I had to actully find all the individual errors from some of the oldest pages and make a list for correcting all the rest of the pages. Took me 2 hours to fix the first one. Only 1011 more to go! Seriously though, the first page I fixed is the one that lists my Artwork for sale! Think I'll get any sales????

Still 4 more aftershocks today NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF PAPUA, INDONESIA measuring 4.8 to 5.3 on the Richter Scale. Rough time for those folks.

One of the things that has been pending but needed to be taken care of, was my counter logs on these webpages. Each page that has a counter on it, well, to make a long story short, each one must have it's own number. When my computer crashed in March, I lost my document that kept track of which numbers had been assigned. I used different starting points for each series of webpages as well as topics within those pages. So you can see it would be quite hard to remember where I was in the numbering system if I add new pages. Which I have. So I had to go thru every page on every webpage URL that I handle to get the numbers. I was quite surprised to see how many mistakes I had made! So now I have to reconstruct the numbers and page titles according to each URL of course, and then go back and correct the duplicates and gaps and all that kind of stuff. The pages have grown so, since I first started them that it was time to expand the numbers to 4 digits anyway. But what a big job!!! The mistakes just mean that some of the counters are not counting the visitors. There are other updates that have needed to be made also internal to the html of each page, which I have tried to do as I visit the pages, but often forget which ones are done. So this way I'll do it all at once, page by page, step by step, inch by inch.....well, you get the picture. It will definitely take awhile, but at least I can get my counter number document reconstructed now.

I have, in case you hadn't noticed, some falling "snow" on this journal page! I sure would love to see some of that nasty stuff for a day or two, wouldn't you? It's so pretty coming down. Oh, yeah, we've had 2-3 days in December and such where we had brief snow showers or flurries. But I'm talkin' real snow. But it only has to stay here for a couple days and then I would say, "Be Gone!" So all I'm askin' for is a couple days of snow. No snowstorms, no blizzards, no ice, oh PLEASE, NO ice! Just a little fluffy white snow to make it seem like winter. No bad email comments, PLEASE.

Another aftershock measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF PAPUA, INDONESIA. In fact, in addition to the 6.0, there were another 19 aftershocks measuring 4.7 to 5.4. Pretty rough times. Nothing heard on the news media about it at all.

Quiet day, resting up and all that jazz. Tracked Seth through the western part of Tennessee and through Arkansas this afternoon, but couldn't hear him at all. It was SO cool that we got him last night in Kentucky!!! My first county!!! Now I have only 3076 counties and 42 independent cities to go!!!!! Tonight he is in Oklahoma, don't know how much further they will go for today. County hunting that he loves to do on the road kinda shuts down around dark for the most part. Too much interference here on the East Coast from the foreign short wave radio broadcasts.

I updated my complete address book with both addresses, phone numbers and email addresses etc. I'm still missing quite a few, but I'm at least working on it! It's been a project that is LONG overdue! I couldn't hardly get organized to send out Christmas cards this year because my address list was so out of date. I also was negligent about doing a letter, but next year, I promise, I will do a letter! Seth sent out such a good letter this year and I was absolutely jealous! So I will do better next year. Well, it won't be as good as his, because he is a good writer and has tons of adventures all year long. But I'll at least write something to let folks know we're still around!

There have been two big earthquakes today NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF PAPUA, INDONESIA. One measured 7.3 on the Richter Scale, another measured 7.6. There were also 6 others of lesser intensity ranging from 4.6 to 5.8 on the Richter Scale. There have been 7 more which would count in tomorrow's date since it is already the 4th on that side of the world, ranging from 4.7 to 5.4 on the Richter Scale. Below is the warnings that have been issued:

"A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas. Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides. At 2:34 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 3, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.5 occurred in the Irian Jaya region, Indonesia. And at 11:44 AM Pacific Standard Time on January 3, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.8 occurred in the Irian Jaya region, Indonesia."

Tough way to start the New Year. Remember how blessed we are here in the USA!

I read this in one of my morning Devotionals and felt I should post it in my journal today.

Perseverance means:
1) Succeeding because you're determined to, not because you're entitled to.
2) Recognizing that life is not one long race, but many short ones in succession.
3) Perseverance is needed to win the prize.
4) Perseverance turns adversity into advancement.
5) Perseverance means stopping not because you're tired, but because the job is done.
6) Perseverance doesn't demand more than we have, but ALL that we have.

And the Greatest Enemies of Perseverance:
1) A lifestyle of giving up.
2) A wrong belief that life should be easy.
3) Lack of resiliency.
4) Lack of vision.
5) Lack of purpose.

May you have the Perseverance to achieve your goals.

Happy New Year !!!!

Starting off the New Year with some cold temperatures! It was rather cold in the house for part of the afternoon yesterday with no power. Thankfully, we got power back after 6 hours and the house warmed up some by bedtime.

I have many New Year's Resolutions as well as many Project Lists of things I want to accomplish this year. I also want to get set up on eBay to sell some stuff. I'll let you know when I get some things listed online. It will be mostly books to start with then later I hope to add some sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidery, paintings and so on to the items for sale. Hey, I have bills I need to pay too.

So the information on the Meteor Showers is this: The Quadrantids are named after the disused constellation Quadrans Muralis, the Wall Quadrant, now amalgamated into northern Boötes. The peak lasts only a few hours, so can be easily missed. It is due around 12h50m UT on 2009 January 3 (first quarter Moon). Peak ZHRs are occasionally variable (the highest recently was 180 in 1992), and a second, lesser, maximum has been found sometimes since 2000, mainly in radio observations about 9-12 hours after the main peak. Medium-speed meteors.

And the latest on them is this: FIRST METEORS OF 2009: The annual Quadrantid meteor shower peaks on Jan. 3rd when Earth enters a stream of debris from shattered comet 2003 EH1. The timing of the encounter favors observers in western North America and across the Pacific Ocean who could see dozens to hundreds of meteors during the dark hours before sunrise this Saturday morning. Visit Space Weather Page for a sky map and more information. Be sure to hit your "BACK" button to return to my pages!

Full Wolf Moon - January, Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January's full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Eventually I'll get my Astronomy pages online which will contain all the astronomy information. We'll most likely also post it on the club website since we cover not only Ham radio, but weather and astronomy too. They are connected you know.
