Earthquake Note:
The statistics used for the Daily Worldwide Earthquake Totals includes the latest Earthquakes Magnitude 2.5 or Greater in the United States and Adjacent Areas and Magnitude 4.5 or Greater in the Rest of the World.

Daily PHA Note:
Potentially Hazard Asteroids (PHA's)are space rocks larger than approximately 100m (size) that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time. 1 AU is the distance of earth to the sun, so 0.05 AU is basically about 1/20th the distance from earth to sun. So the numbers I will be displaying, hopefully daily, will represent asteroids that are passing closer to earth than 1/20th the distance between the earth and sun and could be potentially hazardous to life on earth.

One Meter = 39.37 inches (just over a yard!).
AU = Distance from earth to sun.
LD (Lunar Distance) = The distance from earth to the moon,
384,401 km or 234,484.61 miles (a km, kilometer is .61 of a mile).

Volcanoes Note:
How many active volcanoes known?
Erupting now: perhaps 20
Each year: 50-70
Each decade: about 160
Historical eruptions: about 550

These figures do not include the large number of eruptions (and undescribed volcanoes) on the deep sea floor. Estimates of global magma budgets suggest that roughly 3/4 of the lava reaching Earth's surface does so unnoticed at submarine mid-ocean ridges.

Busy day, laundry, housework etc. Otherwise, I guess you could say it was a routine day.

In my spare time I've been building up my farm in FB and learning alot from Jimmy!!! His farm was started just a day ago and he is already way ahead of me!!!! He also beats me in all the games we've been playing online!!!! Oh well, it's so much fun!!! I don't even care about others beating me... though I am a little competitive regardless!!!

Couple of quick cloud-bursts, one around 3 pm and another around 11 pm this evening. More storms expected throughout the night!

There was an earthquake today measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale OFFSHORE HONDURAS. At least 6 people killed, 40 injured and more than 130 buildings damaged or destroyed in northern Honduras. The central span of a major bridge at El Progreso was destroyed. At least 5 buildings destroyed and 25 damaged in Belize. Felt in much of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Also felt in the Cayman Islands and in parts of Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama. Seiches were reported in swimming pools at La Ceiba and Roatan and ground cracks and possible liquefaction was observed at Monkey River, Belize. Based on the earthquake location, magnitude, and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, U.S. Atlantic, Eastern Canadian and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Earthquakes of this size can generate destructive tsunamis along the coast near the epicenter. Authorities in the epicentral region should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.

Can't believe the little kittens are taking up residence under my car. The very worst place they could be. I'm so afraid now to move the car, I just hate to accidentally run over one of them. Seems like it happens every time there are kittens around. Used to happen up in Westminster. We had the little Dodge Colts and one time I ran to the corner store for milk and heard something as I was getting back into the car. There were 6 little kittens under my hood, where I couldn't get to them. Well, I drove the ½ mile back to our house, very slowly and gingerly. One apparently jumped out and ran away, as I didn't see him lying on the side of the road anywhere (and believe me I looked for him!). And the other 5 made it back to our house safe and sound!

So I'm trying to lure these kittens out with food, away from the car, farther each day, hoping they will figure it out before I have to take a drive somewhere! So far, three of the seven, now come out for the food. Not while I am outside, as they are wild, you know... but I'm hoping the others will follow suit..... Then I can put food out before I have to move the car and give them all time to vacate the underside of the vehicle.... Don't expect me to be on time to anything, for awhile!!!!! (Not that I have anywhere to go anyway....truly a home-body if there ever was one!)

Well, I've been doing a little organizing, at least in my thoughts and on paper. I've decided that just making lists isn't good enough. I need to be more diligent about setting goals too. That has worked really well for me in other areas such as reading the Bible through each year and reading morning devotions. So now I'm going to apply that principle to another area of my life. I'm setting goals for Household Projects and Hobby Projects that I want to accomplish, not only each month, but also during a year. After all, I set the goal of reading the Bible through each year and this is my 3rd year of doing so. I calculated the number of chapters and divided that by the number of days in a year and set my goal of reading 3-4 chapters each night. It's not hard when you do it like that. Also each year, I'm reading a different translation, which makes it even more interesting!

So, I'm going to take this principle and apply it to my Genealogy Research, my Scrapbooking, my Music, my Oil Painting and to all the various hobbies that I keep. Most importantly, I'm going to apply it to projects around the house also. Such as, Room-by-Room work that I want to accomplish like cleaning out closets, painting the walls, etc. Discipline. That's what I need. A routine. I always seem to function better that way. Lately, I've taken too much time just worrying about things and not accomplishing things.... So here we go! I've got a PLAN!!!!

Here's the latest on the Mt. Redoubt Volcano: The 2009 eruption of Redoubt Volcano has entered its 10th week. Lava continues to erupt from a vent in the summit crater feeding a blocky, rubbly lava dome that extends out of the summit crater and more than 500 m (1640 ft) down the north flank of the volcano. Although volcanic seismicity has declined somewhat in the last few weeks, it remains elevated above pre-eruption background. Volcanic gas emissions also remain elevated. The growing lava dome is potentially unstable and the possibility of a full or partial collapse remains high. Such a collapse would likely be accompanied by a large ash plume and lahars in the Drift River Valley. This event could occur with little or no warning. Consequently, AVO continues to monitor the volcano 24 hours per day and the aviation color code remains ORANGE and the alert level WATCH.

Quiet day, just some housework and laundry. Kitten number 7 has appeared. And I thought that Salt & Pepper were "twins"... at least I've always called them that because...well, they are. But you can tell them apart. The 7 kittens, while a couple have abit more white on them, one has a pirate eye patch, the rest are like carbon copies... It's truly amazing.... And they're so-o-o-o-o-o-o cute!!!!

Anyone want some kittens????????

My favorite 8 year old played outside for awhile today. He took photos of the grass, the trees, the flowers, the flag, both vehicles, the cats and the kittens! Which, by the way, number 6 has showed up and is black and white just like the others.... Oh, my, they all look the same!!! Boots hasn't brought her babies up to visit us yet and I'll bet she has about 4-6 also.... Anybody want some cute little kittens?????? Salt & Pepper are very protective still, but don't get aggressive with us as long as we just look and don't touch. It upsets Salt abit when we get too close to them and I saw Pepper attack the raccoon last night, just because he came up to the deck. He's twice her size but that didn't matter....

The other stray female that we call "Cali" hasn't been around. I think she was "fixed" by someone and maybe belongs to someone local, because she shows up for 2-3 days then disappears, sometimes for a week or more. I suspect that Salt & Pepper would keep her away anyhow for now....

Well, a little warmer today and I'm slowly feeling better, at least as long as I take my cold medicine!

Seth is on Storm Chase 2009. I haven't done the news-email this year, as he has a blog setup and I've been kinda busy... Activity has been slow, but they did see some storms today. We're hoping things will pick up for them this week!!!!

Busy day, ran some laundry and did some basic housework. Still have this nagging headcold, so it's slowing me down some.

Another black & white kitten has shown up making the total 5 kittens. They all look like Salt & Pepper. Don't know how we'll ever tell them apart! Jimmy suggested naming them after seasonings, since we already have "Salt" & "Pepper". Jim said one of them should be called "Dillweed".... I'm thinking about Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, Parsley, Oregano, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger.... but many of those names sound very feminine, and what would happen if I named one of them, say, Rosemary, for example, and then it turned out to be a male? I think HE wouldn't be too happy about that.....

I remember when we had Tom, up in Westminster and HE turned out to be a SHE, so we called her Tom anyway, but said it was short for Thomasina.....

Another beautiful, sunny day, but a bit warmer! Glad we don't have this kind of weather all year long. It would be SO-O-O-O boring.... I like a little storms, a little nip in the air, snow on the ground, spring bulbs blooming and rain on the roof. You can keep the hurricanes, however.

Actually, if the humidity rises, you could keep the hot weather too. But so far, it hasn't been too bad. At least like last week, when the humidity was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Tracking Seth on the Storm Chase. They made it to Cheyenne, Wyoming last night. That's a long haul!!! Not much predicted storm wise, but we'll keep hoping the weather will cooperate!

Cat attack. Yep, Salt & Pepper decided to bring their kittens for me to see. Remember, those were the two stray kittens that have been showing up here for the last year? Well, the kittens were really tiny and I thought I would bring them onto the deck for safety sake. I took the first one and no problem. When I came back for the second one, it hollared and mama Salt went into attack mode. I let the kitten go and it ran off, she chased it to make sure it was ok, then she came back at me, all snarls and spitting and batting me with both paws. She bit me, about 4-5 times but didn't get thru my jeans or gloves very good. I suspect if I'd had shorts on, or no gloves, she would have hurt me pretty badly.... I was shocked. So I kept backing away and if I tried to turn my back on her, she'd hunch down to jump on me. Vicious mama cat. She should know I'd never hurt those babies.... Anyway, I finally got back into the house and later she came up to me on the deck and sniffed me then rubbed all against me. Did she not know who I was out on the ground? Guess she hasn't heard the saying about "biting the hand that feeds you"? Anyway, she seems fine today, as long as I keep my distance from the kittens. Jim came home and was able to pet all 4 kittens. (I think one belongs to Pepper and the other 3 must be Salt's). But the difference was I tried to pick them up and take them somewhere, I guess. Won't do that again......

Currently, she moved them to under the Buick and I can see them playing there during the day. They did follow Salt & Pepper to the house and were playing under the deck. I guess the good news is they are good mama cats, watching over the babies... Better than some human mothers, in fact. Salt acted just like normal with me this morning also when I put some food out for her and Pepper, so lesson learned: Don't touch the babies.

Otherwise, routine day, housework, babysitting, cooking and dishes. Nothing else to report right now.

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.5 on the Richter Scale in the KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION. Actually there was a whole series of earthquakes there starting late yesterday evening, ranging from 2.9 to the current high of 6.5 on The Richter Scale.

And speaking of earthquakes, we had 3.0 earthquake with the epicenter 3 miles SW of Roanoke, right here in Virginia this morning. It happened at 4:08 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

So I lost internet late this afternoon for awhile. I hadn't checked the radar, so don't know if it's rain/storms coming or what. But she's down. And now I'm back but there are two lines of storms coming. Don't know if the 2nd line will hold together as it goes over the mountains, but the first line is almost here! Will be shutting down for awhile.

We had a mild thunderstorm last night around 1:30 am. But it's been off and on sunny then cloudy today. The humidity was very high, but the storms that developed this afternoon near the Virginia Beach area, slowly dissapated as they moved northward. They fizzled out completely about halfway to our location. So no more storms tonight. These seem to be the summertime garden variety "pop-corn" type storms that fall apart once the heating of the sun is gone. (You know, sunset.)

Here's the latest on Mt. Redoubt: The 2009 eruption of Redoubt continues. Seismicity at the volcano remains low compared with earlier phases of the eruption. Rock falls and vigorous steaming continue from the lava dome and summit crater. AVO continues to monitor Redoubt's activity 24/7.

Busy day, had some housework I just had to accomplish.

Happy Mother's Day !!!!

I hope all the mother's out there had a good Mother's Day! I heard from all my "men" so I'm happy as can be!

It was a bright sunny day and slightly warm, but not as bad as yesterday. Less humidity also. Originally it was going to be sunny all this week. But I see the latest forecast is showers tomorrow and then thunderstorms on Thursday. So maybe we're not completely done with all this wet weather.

There was an earthquake today measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale OFF THE COAST OF ECUADOR.

I did more work around the house. You'd think that the house would be clean by now. But it's not. I am creating a bit of garbage, hallelujah, so that's a good thing!!!! Otherwise, it's still got quite aways to go, before it's where I want it to be. This has been long overdue. I think since I broke my ankle back in 2006..... man, that sounds terrible.....

We're under a severe thunderstorm watch again tonight. Hail and winds being the reason for the watch, though there is also that pesky 2% chance of tornadoes... Last night the storms split and went both North and South of our location. So we didn't get anything additional. Tonight, we shall see. It has also been quite a bit warmer today, in the upper 80's. I currently see a very narrow line of storms developing out in West Virginia, that if they hold together over the mountains, could reach us. But that's a BIG if.

Storm cells skirted just to our south. Saw lightning and heard thunder, but no rain here.

It has been breezy all day and our power has flickered several times. With all the rain we've had this past week, a little wind could prove to be a problem. Trees, you know. They do occasionally fall down.

And the latest on Mt. Redoubt in Alaska:

Growth of the lava dome continued this past week and is now roughly equivalent in size to the largest dome that was emplaced during the 1989-90 eruption. As the dome grows larger it is increasingly unstable with a growing likelihood of a complete or partial dome failure. Currently AVO considers renewed explosive activity and dome destruction as the most likely outcome of the current episode of dome growth. The return to explosive behavior may occur with little or no advanced warning and would produce a significant ash cloud and lahars and/or flooding in the Drift River valley. There is also a possibility that the current episode of dome growth will slowly diminish and no further explosive activity will occur. Based on our knowledge of past eruptions at Redoubt AVO considers this outcome to be less likely. Seismicity has varied in its frequency, magnitude, and source characteristics over the past week, but remains consistent with continued dome growth. Numerous rock falls off the unstable north flank of the dome have been observed in seismic and web camera images this week, and have produced minor ash plumes that have reached heights of 12,000 ft above sea level (several thousand feet above the volcano). Vigorous venting of steam and other volcanic gases has been observed, and broad regions of sulfur dioxide gas have been detected by airborne gas measurement flights and in satellite images extending for hundreds of miles from the volcano. Thermal anomalies related to dome growth were observed in satellite data throughout the week. AVO is monitoring the situation closely and the observatory is staffed 24/7. AVO will provide frequent updates of the volcano's status and the earliest possible warning of significant explosive activity and other hazardous phenomena.

So it's not over yet.

What was that big bright thing in the sky today???? Oh, the sun. It's been awhile. Big cluster of storms headed our way for late tonight. I'll be shutting down shortly. This is a storm system that has caused abit of havoc across the Tennessee Valley area today. It is disapating a little as it comes over the Appalachian Mountains, but still expect more rain and the convective outlook says possibly a little wind and even a chance of some hail. I don't know that we will get that by the time it crosses the state. But still looks pretty interesting.

Did a lot of stuff around the house today. Moved a bookcase and file cabinet in the music room to a different wall in the same room, which is for me a big job. (Really only about a 3 foot move, but you still have to remove all the books to do so!). But that way everything gets a good cleaning. It's not done, but will finish up Sunday or Monday. Same with the closet. I work on stuff and rest, then work, then rest. When I was younger, I could "attack" a project and complete it in the same day. But those days are long gone, so I do what I can. The end result will make me happy regardless....

The latest radar shows the storms are less than they were an hour ago. In fact, looks like they're going to do the old split and go North & South of our location. So no worries about heavy rains etc for us tonight.

Well, I checked in on Facebook, played a couple games, did a couple pick 5's, answered some comments. Now I'm tired and going to call it a night!

May 7, 2009 - Thursday

Temperatures: Hi - 81° Lo - 63° Rainfall Amounts: 1.3"(inches)

Daily PHA (Potentially Hazardous Asteroids) Count: 1054

So, although we were under a tornado watch until 4 am this morning, nothing bad happened here. We had a storm, very mild, very little lightning but about 0.9" rainfall. Then another short, mild storm around 11:30 am this morning. Then another around 5 pm and another around 6:30 pm and still another brief one around 7:30 pm or so. I think you get the picture. So rainfall total, since midnight is 1.3".

Otherwise, since I had the computer down most of the day, I actually got a little work done. I continued working in the closet and actually see some floor now! Still have aways to go and still need to do the upper shelves, but at least I'm getting there!!! And I'm creating some garbage!!! That's always a good thing!!!

And I still have some other major projects to accomplish in the next week or so.... I'm moving too slow on THIS project!!! I have a ton of filing to do, sorting to do, scanning to do, ripping to do, recording to do, painting to do, sewing to do, well, you get the idea... It's hard to focus on one project, but that's what I need to do until it's done, then redirect my focus onto another project. Somedays are diamonds, somedays are stone.....

Had a couple of errands to run today and did so already. Now I'm home and about to "finish" that closet project that I started yesterday.... I knew it would be a big job, and I must admit, it IS a BIG job. I'm going to remember how much work this was and try to keep stuff from piling up again in there. What a pain.

I've been recording the Bob Ross "Joy of Painting" Shows on PBS and today's was really cool. He did a night-time painting of mountains in Alaska with Northern Lights in the sky!!!! Awesome! I remember seeing Northern Lights as a child and vaguely remember being a little afraid of them..... Don't know why, just a childhood thing, I guess....

Todays update on Mt. Redoubt: The eruption of Redoubt continues. Seismic activity remains elevated, with nearly constant volcanic tremor detected at the summit. Ongoing rockfalls have re-mobilized small amounts of ash into the air at lower elevations around the summit. An explosive event could occur at any time with little or no warning. AVO continues to monitor Redoubt's activity 24/7.

Storms headed my way, so I may have to shut down early tonight.... We shall see...

Some breaking news on Mt. Redoubt in Alaska:

Seismic and rockfall activity remains at an heightened level. Explosive eruption likely in coming days; could occur at any time with little or no warning. The growing lava dome is becoming increasingly unstable and should a dome failure occur it likely would result in a significant explosion producing high altitude (>30,000 ft ASL) ash plumes, trace to minor ash fall in parts of south-central Alaska, lahars in the Drift River Valley, and pyroclastic flows in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. AVO continues 24/7 operations and is monitoring the situation closely.

And on the personal note, I worked on cleaning out our bedroom closet. Man, what a job! Hadn't cleaned it out, well, maybe not this good, since we moved here!!!! So you get the picture that it REALLY needed to be done. I'm not finished yet, but hope to finish tomorrow. I did bag up a couple bags of clothes for either Good Will or a SecondHand type store, as well as a couple bags for the dump. Well, I'll see what else I can sort through and dispose of tomorrow.

Happy Birthday Justin !!!!

We have rainy weather right now, so probably won't be able to see this locally in VA. But here is the info, in case your rainy skies turn clear…..

Forecasters expect the 2009 eta Aquarid shower to peak on Wednesday morning, May 6th, with as many as 85 meteors per hour over the southern hemisphere. Sky watchers in Australia, New Zealand, South America and southern Africa are favored. Rates in the northern hemisphere will be less, 20 to 30 per hour. The best time to look is during the moonless hour before local sunrise. That is when the shower's radiant is high in the sky and the nearly-full Moon will have set, leaving the sky dark for meteors.

Eta Aquarids are flakes of dust from Halley's Comet, which last visited Earth in 1986. Although the comet is now far away, beyond the orbit of Uranus, it left behind a stream of dust. Earth passes through the stream twice a year in May and October. In May we have the eta Aquarid meteor shower, in October the Orionids. Both are caused by Halley's Comet.

The shower is named after a 4th-magnitude star in the constellation Aquarius. The star has nothing to do with the meteor shower except that, coincidentally, meteors appear to emerge from a point nearby. Eta Aquarii is 156 light years from Earth and 44 times more luminous than the Sun.

The constellation Aquarius does not rise very far above the horizon in the northern hemisphere, and that's why northerners see relatively few meteors. But the ones they do see could be spectacular Earthgrazers.

Earthgrazers are meteors that skim horizontally through the upper atmosphere. They are slow and dramatic, streaking far across the sky. The best time to look for Earthgrazers is between 2:00 to 2:30 a.m. local time when Aquarius is just peeking above the horizon.

Experienced meteor watchers suggest the following viewing strategy: Dress warmly. Bring a reclining chair, or spread a thick blanket over a flat spot of ground. Lie down and look up somewhat toward the east. Meteors can appear in any part of the sky, although their trails will point back toward Aquarius.

And the latest on the Volcano, Mt. Redoubt of Alaska, the 2009 eruption of Redoubt volcano continues. Seismicity remains elevated. Vigorous steaming at the summit is visible in the webcams. Explosive events are possible with little or no warning. The volcano remains at ORANGE/WATCH and AVO is staffed 24/7.

I saw my first Indigo Bunting today. He landed on the deck and hopped up to the feeder. They are such a bright blue!!! Anyway, that's cool.

In Memory of Mom's Birthday

I have some new things I'm hoping to set up on the webpages this month. Other goals this month are as follows: Clean out our bedroom closet, clean out the coat closet, clean out the bathroom cabinets, continue working in the basement, accomplish some more recordings towards the next CD, rip some CD's, scan some genealogy data, scan some photos, work on a couple scrapbook pages, sort puzzle pieces and of course, do some more oil paintings! We'll see how much I actually get accomplished!!!!

Today would've been my Mom's 84th birthday, had she lived.
