Early on August 11, 1953, a tropical storm was discovered in the southeastern Bahamas. It became a hurricane northeast of the Bahamas the same day and intensified as it moved north. At 10 pm on August 13th, it struck the coast of North Carolina between Morehead City and Ocracoke. The storm then moved NNE, before going back out into the Atlantic just south of Norfolk, Virginia.

Winds reached 63 mph with gusts to 76 mph at Norfolk, sustained winds at Cape Henry were 72 mph. Cape Henry lighthouse had its copper canopy torn loose during the storm. Rainfall amounts across southeast Virginia ranged from five to eight inches. Portsmouth, Virginia saw over nine inches of rain within a 24 hour period.
