Hurricane Carol was a major hurricane when it made landfall in North Carolina. It moved northward towards New England just 100 miles off the Virginia Capes and brought winds of 40 mph to Virginia Beach. Norfolk, Virginia received four inches of rain and Chincoteague reported the lowest pressure at 29.28". Because the Mid-Atlantic area was under drought conditions, Hurricane Carol helped this situation.
