Hurricanes

I have collected so much Hurricane data over the years, that I'm having difficulty trying to find an easy way to display all of it on these webpages. So, with that in mind, you will see many changes in these pages in the next few weeks.

I originally was doing a separate page for each tropical storm and hurricane, but that quickly grew out of hand! So I'm going to try a yearly system, dividing the data up by the year. Some hurricanes may warrant a page of there own due to the amount of data that I have on them. But there will be some general statistics on each hurricane and tropical storm by the year first. I will also eventually have an alphabetical list for easy access to a particular storm. Please be patient as I try to organize this mountain of data.

Hurricane Facts in a Nutshell

Check it out!!! Interesting facts about hurricanes and tropical storms. The most deadly, most expensive, most storms in a year, most used names and much more!

I only have the data uploaded from 1950 to current, so far. I will be adding the older data in the coming weeks. So if you click on 1851 through 1949, well, there isn't anything available yet. Coming soon, I promise!!

Around 1951, the United States began using a phonetic list of names for the storms, to help avoid confusion in reports by sea vessels on latitude and longitude of troubled seas. Sometimes a ship would report information on a storm, when there was another one a hundred miles away that a report had been received on also. So Able, Baker, Charlie, etc., was used for a couple of years. This became confusing also, so they began to use women's names around 1953.

The Tropical Prediction Center near Miami, Florida, monitors disturbances and tropical depressions around the Gulf of Mexico, Carribean and Atlantic Ocean. When one of these disturbances intensifies into a tropical storm, with rotary circulation and wind speeds above 38 mph, it is given a name.

Hurricane and Tropical Storm names are chosen from a list originating from the National Hurricane Center and maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. Up until 1979, this list featured only women's names. Since 1979, men's and women's names are alternated. There are six lists currently in rotation for the Atlantic. The letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are not used because of the scarcity of names beginning with those letters. The only time that the list is changed is when a storm is very costly in property damages or loss of life. Then the name is retired and another name is chosen to replace it. If, in a given year, all the names are used on the list, they would name additional storms from the greek alphabet, Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, etc. Below is the current 6 year list, which obviously "Katrina" will be retired.
