1. From: Kathleen J. Fuller (WFT Vol 13-2742).
2. From: William L. Barber (WFT Vol 20-0110).

The Ricketts family surname was originally Ricards and later changed to Ricketts about 1660 and has remained so since.

The massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day, which occured in Paris on 24 August 1572, spread over France for several days. This family Ricards, being of Protestant religion, fled with the French Huguenots to avoid religious persecution. They went to Kent, England before 1575 and settled at Combe in the county of Hereford, then on to Jamaica and finally to North America.

Although the Ricards first name in not known at this time, he had three sons to carry the name forward. Only one child, Thomas shows record of children. Oswald and William Henry show no record of children.

"Ricard, Esq. of note in County Hereford in 1575, who died leaving the three following sons, a. Oswald, who died before his father; b. William Henry, who died before his father; c. Col. Thomas Ricards, a gallant soldier in the army of Charles I during the Civil War" --(Burke)

  2. OSWALD RICARDS
  3. .

Generation No. 3

3. CAPT THOMAS ANTHONY RICARDS (OSWALD2, RICARDS1) was born Abt. 1590 in Herefordshire, England., and died Abt. 1643 in Litchfield Bat., Hampshire, England. He married ELIZABETH RUGELY Abt. 1617. She was born Abt. 1599 in Rugely, Staffordshire, England.

Notes for CAPT THOMAS ANTHONY RICARDS:
Birth date, one account says ca 1589.

From: William L. Barber (WFT Vol 20-0110).

Ricards traveled from France to England due to Huguenot Persecution in France in the mid 1500's. "Our Family Ricketts" by Lear Ricketts states William and James the eldest sons of Thomas and Elizabeth were officers under Penn and Able of Cromwell's army in the conquest of Jamaica (1655-1670). William's commission was made out in the name of Ricketts and his descendants have ever since retained that designation.

Some findings by Benjamin Merrill Ricketts MD> professor of medicine at St. Louis University and the University of Cincinnati:

Thomas was reported to have married Elizabeth Rugely in Staffordshire, England, probably between 1618-1632.

He was reported to have served as a Col. in the British army and was killed in battle at the Siege of Litchfield while serving in support of the Royal Cause of King Charles I.

ca1646-"a Gallant soldier in the army of King CharlesI. He was killed supporting the royalist cause against the Parliamentarians (Puritans) at the siege of Litchfield." ---Burke

Fled Normandy 1589-Ricquier France, some records indicate.

  2. JOHN RICARDS.
  3. JAMES RICARDS.

Generation No. 4

4. CAPT. WILLIAM HENRY RICKETTS (CAPT THOMAS ANTHONY3 RICARDS, OSWALD2, RICARDS1) was born Abt. 1618 in Twyford Hampshire, England, and died June 02, 1700 in Ridge Land, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. He married (1) BLACKISTON Abt. 1656 in England. He married (2) MARY GOODWIN Abt. 1672, daughter of ROBERT GOODWIN. She was born Abt. 1654 in Winchendon, Bucks, England, and died April 16, 1750 in Canaan, Westmoreland, Jamaica.

Notes for CAPT. WILLIAM HENRY RICKETTS:
From: William L. Barber (WFT Vol 20-0110).

William lived in Ridgeland, Jamaica and later moved to New Jersey, USA in 1665. He owned vast holdings in Jamaica and Maryland.

He served with Cromwell's aremy during the British civil war. This places him in the army opposing his father.

He was reported to have married twice. It is believed that his first marriage was in 1656, to (N) Blackiston, and his second marriage was to Mary Goodwin in 1672. Goodwin's are listed in Maryland as early as 1638.

There is a definite conflict in the marriage dates of both wives. Some say all children were born of the marriage to Mary Goodwin. Others believe that one or two of the children were born from his first marriage to (N) Blackiston. His 2nd son's name, William Blackiston Ricketts would also indicate the same fact.

There is a ton of information now available on Mary Goodwin's ancestry, sent to me by William Suter. I will be added this information over the next several weeks.

"In 1639, he married Mary, daughter of Sir Francis Goodwin and the Lady Elizabeth Grey, only daughter of Arthur, 14th Lord Grey de Wilton, by his lordship's first wife, Dorothy Zouch." ---Burke

The above entry from "Burke" contradicts other data. Perhaps it is speaking of a different "he", or there was a 1st wife before Blackiston and Goodwin. Or the marriage to Mary Goodwin was the earlier marriage. But this fact doesn't fit, as his will left Mary as his executrix. This needs to be researched also.

Sounds like Goodwin's in Maryland have nothing to do with the above marriage to Mary Goodwin. There may be another connection of the English Goodwin family to the Maryland Goodwin family. This should be researched at some point.

"...a captain in Cromwell's Parliamentarian army who, accompanying the expedition under Admiral William Penn and Venables, was present at the conquest of Jamaica in 1655, and subsequently obtained the command of Bluefield's fort on the island. His commission having been made out in the name of Rickett's, he and his descendants ever since have retained that spelling of the name." --Burke

Capt William Ricketts died 2 June 1700, leaving his wife, Mary Goodwin, his executrix and the sole guardian of their 8 children. Buried 3 June 1700.

William also received a land grant of 10,000 acres of land presumabably in the area of the Virginia Colony. (Elkton, Cecil Co, Md). This land was on both sides of Big Creek at the head of Chesapeake Bay near the present town of Elkton, Md. Here William built a large Colonial Mansion house of brick, which were shipped over from England. The house was built about the year 1680, no authentic date is known. Later a great mill was built near the house with a confirmed date of 1720. The mill, known as the Old Mill was torn down in 1865 and a new one built still standing today and is now used as a grist Mill. Prior to the Revolutionary war the 10,000 acre tract was divided into smaller tracts leaving 201 acres out of the original 10,000 acres which still surrounds the Mansion and Mill. Three members of the Ricketts family, descendants of William Ricketts are living near the old home. This land has been owned by Ricketts descendants for over 300 years.

Notes for WILLIAM BLACKISTON RICKETTS:
In the information provided -
From: Kathleen J Fuller (WFT Vol 13-2742).

She lists all the children born as children of his 2nd wife, Mary Walton. However, the marriage with Mary Walton supposedly took place ca 1712 in NY. Most of these children were born before this date. This needs further research to determine which children were actually born from his first wife, Sarah Ann and which, if any, were born from Mary Walton. For now I have listed them as Mary Walton's children, like the info I received.

Nathaniel's dates are another fact that puzzle me. All records show him being born in 1694. Yet he has a son born in 1755. Which makes Nathaniel 61 years old when his first son was born. It appears that he lived to be 97 years old, which would be wonderful, but I feel very unlikely for the time period. These dates and names need to be researched further to find out the truth about our Nathaniel. I fear that there may be a missing generation between Nathaniel and Charles.
